‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons building toward a surprising question: could Alicent Hightower actually betray her own son? Season 3 episode 7 provides a shocking answer, leaving viewers in disbelief.

In the episode titled The Dragon in Winter, Alicent is sent to Harrenhal under Rhaenyra’s orders, leading to a complex and chaotic situation that goes beyond a mere assassination plot.

Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen instructs Aemond’s own mother to kill him, believing that sending soldiers would only prompt him to flee. Rhaenyra thinks that only someone Aemond trusts completely could get close enough to carry out the deed.

Alicent’s mission to Harrenhal is described as unexpected and unsettling, aimed at eliminating her own son, Aemond Targaryen. The plan is set into motion after Helaena Targaryen discovers Aemond’s hiding place through her visions.

Upon arriving at Harrenhal, Alicent shares a fabricated story about escaping the Red Keep and introduces Aemond to Ser Adrian Redfort, whom she claims rescued her. After embracing her son and kissing him on the cheek, she ominously informs him that Aegon is likely dead.

However, the introduction of Ser Adrian does not unfold as Alicent had hoped. Aemond kills the knight almost instantly, unwilling to risk a stranger learning Harrenhal’s secrets.

As his shocked mother watches, Aemond explains that he trusts no one and reveals his ambition to claim the throne from Harrenhal, confident that Rhaenyra will eventually fall.

Alys Rivers, who has been hiding Aemond, warns him that her plans did not include his mother. She bluntly tells him that Alicent intends to harm him, but Aemond refuses to accept this reality.

The ensuing dinner scene heightens the tension. When Helaena comments on how dragons change people, Rhaenyra visibly reacts, adding to the already strained atmosphere.

Alicent steps outside during the meal, retrieves a dagger from Ser Adrian’s corpse, and heads to her son’s room. Aemond, while practicing swordsmanship, accepts the spiced wine she offers, but an air of dread hangs over the moment.

Alicent appeals to Aemond’s emotions, telling him he is all she has left, even as she pushes him toward a scheme that seems destined for his demise. Later, Aemond stumbles into the dining room, whispers Alys’ name, and collapses, seemingly poisoned by the wine.

Alicent leaves Harrenhal believing she has killed her son. Fans have long speculated whether Alicent could be ruthless enough to harm her own child, and the show delivers a shocking confirmation, complicated by the events leading up to it.

Despite the apparent finality of the poisoning, there are reasons to doubt Aemond’s fate. Although he seems to die after consuming the poisoned wine, the latest trailer for the next episode suggests he might survive.

Alys may have intervened to save Aemond from the poison, as he appears alive in the footage teasing the next chapter. This aligns with her earlier warning, indicating she was more aware of Alicent’s true intentions than Aemond.

Readers of the book ‘Fire and Blood’ know that Aemond meets his end differently, dying above God’s Eye at the hands of Daemon Targaryen during a dragon clash. This assassination attempt is not part of George R. R. Martin’s narrative, placing the show in uncharted territory.

The season 3 finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ premieres August 8, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, and it promises to reveal how Aemond’s story ultimately unfolds.

After a mother poisons her own son, only for the show to hint at his survival in a single trailer shot, how do you think Aemond will navigate his way back from Alicent’s betrayal?
