‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Surpasses $19 Million in Advance Ticket Sales Ahead of Release
Marvel Studios has been navigating a complex relationship with box office expectations in recent years, with some films achieving great success while others have struggled to regain the franchise’s former glory. This uncertainty has made every new data point regarding the studio’s upcoming releases particularly noteworthy, especially for its next major team-up event.
The excitement surrounding this winter’s most anticipated superhero film has intensified recently, driven by a trailer that shattered viewership records and a surge in premium ticket sales that arrived earlier than expected. New tracking data indicates that this momentum is continuing unabated.
According to Global Box Office, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already amassed $19 million in advance ticket sales domestically, a remarkable achievement considering the film is not set to hit theaters until December 18, which is still about four months away. This figure comes from approximately 1,000 theaters across the country, representing a small fraction of the market compared to the film’s anticipated wide release.
This presale surge builds on an already record-breaking start. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales within its first 24 hours of availability, according to Variety, a figure that is double the first-day presales of 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ This comparison is particularly significant as ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had access to all formats and screens at launch, while ‘Doomsday’ tickets were limited to premium formats.
The restriction exists because Marvel’s latest team-up film will not have access to IMAX screens domestically during its initial run, as Warner Bros. secured exclusivity for ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which shares the same December 18 release date. In response, Disney has launched its own premium format certification program, Infinity Vision, aimed at directing fans toward large-format screens that meet the studio’s technical standards.
Despite the absence of IMAX support, industry insiders remain optimistic about the film’s earning potential. A Disney insider told TheWrap that films like ‘Barbie’ and the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ both surpassed the billion-dollar mark without IMAX support, suggesting that ‘Doomsday’ could follow a similar path through formats like Dolby, D-Box, and 4DX.
The film also boasts one of the most impressive ensembles Marvel has ever gathered, featuring Robert Downey Jr. returning as the villain Doctor Doom, alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, and Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic, among many others. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the same team behind ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the film carries the challenge of following one of the highest-grossing movies in history, a benchmark that continues to loom large over the entire post-Endgame era of the MCU.
To further build excitement ahead of ‘Doomsday’s release, Marvel is also re-releasing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in theaters on September 25, offering fans a nostalgic lead-up before the next chapter arrives. This long-term marketing strategy, combined with these early presale figures, indicates that Marvel is committed to making this release feel like a true cultural event rather than just another installment in the franchise.
With four months still remaining before the opening weekend, these early numbers suggest that despite discussions about superhero fatigue, audiences are still eager to support this particular team-up.
