Destin Daniel Cretton Addresses the ‘Wonder Man’ Cancellation and Clears Kevin Feige’s Name
Marvel’s television lineup has seen some surprising shifts in recent years, but few cancellations have left fans as perplexed as the recent news that arrived at an unexpected time. For a studio enjoying significant box office success, the timing of this announcement felt almost contradictory.
This confusion has only increased as more individuals connected to the project have begun to speak out, providing fans with a clearer, albeit still incomplete, understanding of what transpired behind the scenes. Now, one of the show’s creators is finally sharing his thoughts publicly for the first time.
Destin Daniel Cretton has directly addressed the shocking cancellation of ‘Wonder Man’ in a recent interview, clarifying that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was not responsible for the decision to halt production. This news surfaced during the same week that Cretton’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was achieving box office milestones, a striking contrast that only heightened the confusion surrounding Marvel’s choice.
“I know Feige loves that show as much as I do,” Cretton told TheWrap. “It’s a bummer. I’m heartbroken about it. But I need to fully understand the why.”
Cretton expressed how personally the cancellation affected him, given the dedication he and co-creator Andrew Guest invested in the project. “I love that show to death,” he remarked in the same interview with TheWrap. “If it were up to me, we would be making that show. And I do believe that if it were up to Kevin, we would be doing that show.”

The cancellation surprised nearly everyone involved, especially since ‘Wonder Man’ had been renewed for a second season just months earlier. Showrunner Andrew Guest previously disclosed that contracts had already been signed and schedules cleared for the follow-up season, with the writers’ room ready to begin work before the sudden change.
Guest also clarified that Cretton’s increasingly busy schedule, including his commitment to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ was not a factor in the show’s cancellation. According to Guest, the decision stemmed from an internal call made jointly by Disney and Marvel, leaving even the creative team puzzled about what had changed since the initial renewal.
This uncertainty is further complicated by the show’s positive critical and audience reception, which has been notably strong. ‘Wonder Man’ currently boasts a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received an Emmy nomination, with fans praising it as a fresh, self-aware take on the superhero genre that avoided feeling like a rehash of familiar Marvel formulas.
Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery from ‘Iron Man 3,’ the series followed a struggling actor navigating a superhero-saturated Hollywood while secretly possessing real powers. The show marked Cretton’s second collaboration with Marvel Studios after ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ solidifying his position within the franchise.
With no clear explanation yet from Marvel regarding the shift between the season two renewal and the abrupt cancellation, fans are left trying to piece together a narrative that even the show’s creators admit they don’t fully grasp.
