Blockbuster filmmaking has always depended on the careful collaboration of creative minds. When studios tackle the immense challenge of bringing ensemble narratives to life, the writing room becomes essential for ensuring that audiences engage with expansive, interconnected storylines rather than getting lost in narrative confusion.

The ‘Avengers’ films have particularly highlighted the importance of having screenwriters who can balance spectacle with intimacy, managing numerous character arcs while preserving emotional depth.

The stakes are higher than ever for Marvel Studios. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom stepping in as the main antagonist and the merging of multiple universes, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ marks a crucial turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s journey. The film’s success will depend not only on thrilling action sequences and stunning visuals but also on whether audiences can connect with the conflicts that propel these characters.

Marvel has now revealed the backbone of this narrative. Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote all three ‘Captain America’ films, along with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, is leading the writing team for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with Michael Waldron co-writing. Waldron previously served as the head writer and executive producer of the Disney+ series ‘Loki’ during its inaugural season and was the sole credited writer for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

The experience of this writing duo underscores Marvel’s dedication to this project. McFeely has significantly influenced some of the MCU’s most cherished moments, crafting the emotional peaks of both ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ alongside Markus. Waldron has become a key figure in the Multiverse Saga, shaping the thematic core of the MCU’s most intricate storyline. Together, they blend blockbuster appeal with narrative depth.

However, the writing team is even more extensive. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, known for scripting ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’, have penned every Tom Holland ‘Spider-Man’ film, bringing their extensive experience from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to the Avengers projects.

Their participation indicates Marvel’s intention to infuse character-driven energy into this large ensemble piece. McKenna and Sommers have demonstrated their skill in weaving character interactions and emotional moments into action-packed narratives—vital abilities when crafting a story for a cast that could exceed 60 characters.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton noted that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were brought on board mid-production by Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers to help refine the script for both films. This strategic move highlights a crucial behind-the-scenes reality: even the most carefully crafted scripts require adjustments when faced with the practicalities of production.

This collaborative strategy reflects Marvel’s deep understanding of what works in large ensemble casts. Instead of relying on a single creative voice, the studio has gathered a writers’ room filled with architects of the MCU’s previous triumphs, each contributing unique strengths. McFeely offers structural expertise and emotional resonance, Waldron brings multiverse storytelling and thematic clarity, while McKenna and Sommers add character nuance and sharp dialogue.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. With this formidable writing team now assembled, the creative groundwork for what promises to be one of the MCU’s most significant films has been firmly established. Whether this collection of screenwriting talent can craft a narrative that honors the franchise’s legacy while boldly propelling it into the future remains the key question for Marvel’s next chapter.
