Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the iconic Jedi Master has only grown in esteem among fans over the years. Initially met with mixed reactions during the prequel era, his performance has since become one of the franchise’s most cherished character arcs, culminating in a Disney+ series that allowed McGregor to delve into the character’s enigmatic past.

This enigmatic period refers to the time between Obi-Wan’s heartbreaking split from Anakin Skywalker and his eventual appearance as the aged hermit portrayed by Alec Guinness in the original 1977 film. The 2022 limited series merely touched upon these lost years, leaving fans eager to know if there are more stories waiting to be told.

Now, McGregor is reigniting the discussion, expressing that he believes there is still much to explore regarding Obi-Wan’s exile years on Tatooine. He has highlighted the significant gap between where his series concluded and where Guinness’s version of the character begins, indicating that there is ample opportunity for additional narratives to bridge that timeline.

This isn’t the first time McGregor has made this case. Series creator Deborah Chow revealed that McGregor started pitching ideas for a second season as they wrapped filming the first season, insisting there are “another 10 years with plenty of stories” to tell. His enthusiasm for the character has clearly persisted over the years.

McGregor has also been open about the practical aspects of his desire to return to the role. He mentioned that he still has “a few years yet” before reaching the age that Guinness was when he portrayed the character in ‘A New Hope,’ suggesting there is still time to explore more stories within that timeframe. This perspective effectively positions his aging as a natural production window for Lucasfilm.

The actor’s fondness for Obi-Wan has only intensified over time, rather than diminishing as some franchise fatigue narratives suggest. McGregor has expressed his hope for another opportunity to portray the character, reflecting on 25 years of playing the role. His long-term view indicates that his interest is not merely a passing comment during press tours but a sincere, ongoing aspiration.

Central to McGregor’s argument has always been the emotional depth of that specific 10-year period. He has previously described how, during that decade, Obi-Wan was in hiding, leading a solitary existence and losing his faith, akin to someone experiencing a crisis of faith. This thematic complexity is precisely what fuels the argument for revisiting that era.

For fans eager for concrete news, however, it appears they may need to remain patient. Lucasfilm has yet to officially approve any further projects centered on the character, and McGregor’s comments reflect his personal desires rather than confirmed studio plans. Nevertheless, his consistent return to this topic in various interviews and public appearances suggests that the door is far from closed.

It is evident that both McGregor and many fans view Obi-Wan’s Tatooine years as a narrative well that remains full. With McGregor continuing to advocate for more stories, and Lucasfilm’s history of eventually delivering on fan-demanded content, the prospect of another chapter does not seem entirely out of reach.
