Russo Brothers React to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaking ‘Endgame’s’ Box Office Record
When a blockbuster film debuts, it faces more than just competition from other movies; it also contends with the historical records set by previous hits. For seven years, one particular record loomed large, leaving many in the industry questioning whether it could ever be broken.
That record was held by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2019 blockbuster, ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which opened with an impressive $357 million domestically, establishing a benchmark that seemed insurmountable.
However, the cinematic landscape is always evolving. Studios are investing more in marketing, the global demand for major films is increasing, and the fanbase for these franchises remains deeply engaged. These factors create an environment where even the most formidable records can be challenged.
Sony and Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ achieved a remarkable $360 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, surpassing the record previously set by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019. This news is significant not only for box office numbers but also as a symbolic shift in Hollywood’s competitive arena.
The updated global opening for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now stands at $932 million, making it the second-best worldwide opening at the box office, following ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $1.22 billion.
The journey to this achievement was not without its challenges. Early projections on Sunday indicated that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ might fall just short of the record, estimating a total of $355 million. However, moviegoers turned out in greater numbers than expected on Sunday, pushing the film’s total to $360 million, marking Tom Holland’s highest domestic box office opening.
The film set multiple records during its opening weekend, including the largest preview earnings of $72 million and Friday ticket sales totaling $169.8 million, marking the biggest first-day total in cinema history.

Both critics and audiences have responded positively to the film. It boasts a 90% critic score and a 98% audience score on polling platform Cinemascore, which surveys viewers after screenings. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, known for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ has provided a grittier, more grounded portrayal of the wall-crawler, focusing on Peter Parker as he rebuilds his life in a world where no one remembers his identity following the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
The film features a mix of returning favorites and new faces. Tom Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker, while Zendaya returns as MJ, now a student at MIT who has no memory of Parker, though fragments of their past linger in inexplicable ways. The cast also includes Jacob Batalon as Ned, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, Florence Pugh, and Marisa Tomei in supporting roles.
The significance of this opening weekend resonated throughout the industry. The Russo Brothers, who directed ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ shared a congratulatory message on Instagram, stating: “Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history. The gauntlet has been passed…”
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrives at a pivotal moment when the superhero genre is evolving, with audiences increasingly craving more intimate, character-driven narratives even within large-scale blockbusters. This opening weekend indicates that viewers are still eager for Spider-Man stories and that records once deemed unbreakable can indeed be surpassed.
