Disney’s live-action remake initiative has elicited a range of responses over the past decade. While some adaptations have successfully won over skeptical fans, others have struggled to find their footing. Casting announcements have become pivotal moments for these projects, often shaping public opinion long before the films hit theaters.

The anticipation surrounding ‘Tangled‘ was palpable when Disney announced its plans to remake the beloved 2010 animated classic. Initial skepticism began to wane with the reveal of one particular casting choice, and excitement has only intensified since production commenced in Spain.

Kathryn Hahn has now made her debut in full costume as Mother Gothel, providing fans with their best look yet at how the iconic villain will be portrayed in live action. Earlier images only showcased Hahn’s hair and makeup, keeping her costume under wraps, but new footage has finally unveiled her in character, complete with the signature heart-hands gesture familiar to fans of the animated original.

The transformation has sparked immediate comparisons to the original character, with Hahn’s appearance closely resembling the Mother Gothel audiences have cherished for over a decade. Fans online have expressed notable enthusiasm, a reaction that contrasts with the more mixed responses to recent Disney remakes like ‘Snow White’ and ‘Moana.’

Interestingly, Hahn wasn’t the studio’s first choice for the role. Scarlett Johansson was initially considered for Mother Gothel but stepped away to work on ‘The Batman Part II,’ paving the way for Hahn to take on this pivotal character in both the film’s narrative and its promotional efforts.

Reports of Hahn’s casting emerged in January 2026, and she confirmed her role two months later, playfully sharing a photo of herself in a Mother Gothel t-shirt on social media with the caption “OOTD, Mother Gothel.” Disney’s social media accounts joined in on the fun, stating, “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled.”

The journey to filming has not been without its challenges. Production on the live-action ‘Tangled’ initially began in late 2024 but was paused in April 2025 after the disappointing box office results of ‘Snow White.’ Filming resumed that October under director Michael Gracey, known for ‘The Greatest Showman’ and the Robbie Williams biopic ‘Better Man.’

Currently, the film is being shot on location in Spain, with scenes being filmed at notable sites like Burgos Cathedral, which will represent the kingdom. The screenplay is penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, while Kristin Burr, known for her work on ‘Cruella’ and ‘Freaky Friday,’ has recently joined as a producer.

Joining Hahn in the cast are Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, with Diego Luna also cast in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The combination of Hahn’s comedic background and her recent portrayal of the wicked Agatha Harkness in ‘WandaVision’ has bolstered fan confidence in her ability to embody Mother Gothel’s blend of charm and menace.

The pressure to succeed is palpable, given the fond memories associated with the original film. The animated ‘Tangled’ grossed $592 million worldwide against a $260 million budget and holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, setting a high standard for this new adaptation.

With Rapunzel’s tower already seen under construction and secondary villains like the Stabbington Brothers previously confirmed, the live-action ‘Tangled’ is steadily generating excitement ahead of its anticipated 2028 release.
