In recent years, marketing campaigns for major blockbusters have turned into spectacles of their own, with studios vying for online attention just as fiercely as they do for box office dollars. Creating a film that feels inescapable, dominating everything from theater marquees to social media feeds, has become an art form.

Few campaigns this year have achieved this level of engagement quite like the rollout for Sony’s latest web-slinging adventure. From staggered trailer premieres across the globe to behind-the-scenes footage featuring Tom Holland atop a tank, the promotional buildup was relentless even before the opening weekend.

This buildup has translated into impressive results that Sony is celebrating, with the studio proudly declaring ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as the number one movie in the world. This declaration is backed by the film’s box office performance, which has confirmed the studio’s confidence since its release.

The promotional push behind this success was historic, with Sony’s campaign achieving a worldwide media value of $309 million, setting an all-time record for any Hollywood film and surpassing the studio’s previous benchmark of $288 million set by 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’

Jeffrey Godsick, Sony’s EVP of Brand Strategy and Global Partnerships, explained the reasoning behind such a broad promotional strategy, emphasizing that the film is designed to appeal to audiences of all ages. The trailer became the most-watched in motion picture and gaming history, garnering 719 million views in its first 24 hours and exceeding 1.1 billion within four days.

Sony’s enthusiasm is palpable, with Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman discussing why the film resonates with global audiences. He stated, “Whether you live in Peru, Pakistan, or Peoria, everyone wants friends and wants connection with everyone. Fundamentally this is a movie about friendship and hope.”

Rothman also highlighted the creative approach behind the marketing, focusing on a character-driven story centered around Peter Parker and a complex, sympathetic villain portrayed by Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. He noted that the team led with emotion throughout the campaign.

The film’s box office trajectory has given Sony ample reason to celebrate. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has become the second-fastest film to cross $1 billion at the global box office, following a domestic opening of $360 million, which is the largest in North American box office history. It also achieved a record Monday performance in the U.S. and Canada, bringing in $47 million.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s chairman and CEO publicly acknowledged the studio’s creative team and filmmakers for delivering a character-driven, emotionally resonant film at a time when some in the industry have questioned the superhero genre’s longevity. With these impressive numbers continuing to roll in weeks after release, declaring it the number one movie in the world is more fact than hyperbole.
