Apple TV+ has established a reputation for transforming prestige limited series into must-watch events, and its latest con-artist thriller is no exception. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, a woman entrenched in a life of scams and false identities who finds herself facing the repercussions of one last heist.

The series is based on Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel, with Apple releasing new episodes weekly after a two-episode premiere on July 15. Themes of grief, betrayal, and a missing fortune have driven the narrative for four episodes, and the fifth episode, titled “Are We Bad People?”, compels its protagonist to stop fleeing and confront everything she has lost.

Following the previous episode, Lucky had reunited with her husband Cary at a beach house, where he confessed to stealing the casino money and abandoning her before they tried one last escape together. Their plan fell apart when the FBI intervened, leading to a car chase that ended with a bullet puncturing one of their tires. Lucky survived the crash and stayed with Cary until he succumbed to his injuries. Episode 5 explores the emotional aftermath of that loss, as Lucky grapples with her grief while federal Agent Billie Rand tightens her pursuit.

In a desperate bid for time, Lucky persuades a paramedic team to let her ride along in an ambulance, pretending to be the granddaughter of an elderly woman injured in the crash. The ruse works long enough for her to escape at the hospital, but exhaustion soon overwhelms her, leading to an admission she never wanted to make.

While recuperating, Lucky encounters Agent Rand’s teenage daughter in a hospital washroom, a poignant moment that becomes one of the episode’s most impactful scenes. The pivotal discovery that alters the course of the season comes from a teddy bear Cary once gifted Lucky: when she strikes it in frustration, it triggers a hidden recording containing the seed phrase needed to access the couple’s ten-million-dollar cryptocurrency wallet.

This revelation sets the stage for the episode’s most significant twist. Instead of using her newfound access to the fortune to continue fleeing, Lucky makes the unexpected decision to surrender, waiting for the police to arrive and greeting Agent Rand with a quip about her taking long enough to catch up.

Taylor-Joy has described her character as someone constantly battling the disparity between her upbringing and her aspirations. In a Zoom interview with UPI, she stated, “Lucky is smart and traumatized and heavily guarded and trying her best and madly in love with Cary, I think, sometimes, to the point of blindness.” This description resonates powerfully in an episode that centers on Lucky’s unraveling composure.

The act of surrender raises more questions than it resolves. Has Lucky already moved the money to an untraceable location? Is the arrest merely a distraction while she plots her next move? The episode leaves her father John’s involvement in the plan deliberately ambiguous, suggesting he trusts whatever scheme his daughter has devised without fully grasping it himself.

The episode concludes by repositioning nearly every major character as the season progresses. Priscilla, Cary’s mother and the central crime boss of the season, moves ahead with funeral arrangements while still refusing to accept that her son died without leaving her access to the missing fortune.

Apple has confirmed that ‘Lucky’ will continue its weekly rollout, with Episode 6, “Wherever You Go, There You Are,” set to arrive next Wednesday. With Lucky now in custody and her ultimate plan still a mystery, the final stretch of the season promises to test just how far she’s willing to go to finally escape her father’s world.
