Syfy’s sci-fi survival drama quickly reminds viewers that grief is a luxury this crew cannot afford. Following a premiere that saw a beloved character’s demise in its opening moments, ‘The Ark’ returned with a second episode that introduces new threats before anyone has the chance to properly mourn.

The series centers on Captain Sharon Garnet and the crew of Ark One as they navigate colonization, mutiny, and interstellar dangers a century into humanity’s future. With Homebase 1 recently established and the loss of James Brice still fresh, the show plunges its characters into fresh chaos on two fronts.

Titled “It Won’t Hurt Too Much,” Episode 2 begins with Ark One’s crew grappling with Brice’s death, only for Admiral Ben Hammond to swiftly take control of the ship. He steps down when Ian points out his overreach, but the speed of his retreat leaves the crew questioning whether his ambitions have truly vanished. Sharon complicates matters further by inviting Ben to be her second-in-command, a decision that overlooks several loyal crew members who have earned that trust through their dedication.

Tensions escalate when Ark 22 makes contact and demands that Sharon and Ian come aboard. Ben refuses to let them go, citing the previous rescue mission that cost two lives to save just one. When Alicia struggles to get the ship’s shields and offensive systems operational to Ben’s standards, the crew resorts to a drastic measure and knocks him out to take control of the ship themselves.

This gamble leads Sharon and Ian into danger, as they discover Ark 22 is populated entirely by clones upon their arrival. Various versions of familiar faces are scattered throughout the ship, including duplicates raised in a completely different environment than the originals. The group’s leader, a clone named Drake, appears to be the only version of himself aboard, raising unsettling questions about the fate of other Drake clones and his singular focus on Sharon.

Meanwhile, back on the ground, Homebase 1 proves just as unstable as the ship above. A secret affair between Ves and the colony’s new sheriff Milan adds fresh tension to the ensemble, further complicated by the revelation that Milan is actually Dr. Kabir’s ex-husband, a connection that surprises Kabir and Dr. Marsh as the drama unfolds around them.

Elsewhere, Angus and Kelly find themselves trapped in a bizarre, alien-like cave system filled with screeching noises, glowing green lights, and a door leading to a lava pit, setting up a mystery that could extend throughout the season. Felix sets off to investigate what happened to the pair, while Ves and Milan seem to have some idea of their whereabouts.

The episode’s most hopeful thread involves Brice, whose body vanished instead of being confirmed dead on screen. Eva’s cryptic request for security footage suggests a hidden meaning behind her search, and there’s genuine reason to believe Brice may still be alive somewhere out there.

With a mutiny in progress, an army of clones with unclear motives, and a slow-burn mystery unfolding on Homebase 1, ‘The Ark’ has established multiple storylines that appear designed to carry across several episodes rather than wrapping up neatly by the credits.
