Ryan Murphy’s latest true-crime thriller, ‘The Shards’, has already made a significant impact with its double-episode premiere, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next developments in the mystery surrounding the Trawler. This FX series, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s semi-autobiographical novel, launched its first two hours simultaneously, establishing a release pattern for the remainder of the season.

Set in 1981 Los Angeles, ‘The Shards’ follows a fictionalized teenage version of Ellis as he navigates his senior year at the prestigious Buckley prep school while a serial killer preys on teenagers throughout the city. The introduction of the enigmatic new student Robert Mallory has already disrupted Bret’s life, and viewers are keen to see how this tension unfolds.

‘The Shards’ Episode 3, titled “Help Me! Rhonda!”, is set to premiere on FX and Hulu on August 12, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET, continuing the show’s weekly Wednesday release schedule that began with the two-episode premiere on August 5. Unlike the initial night, which featured a double episode, Episode 3 will be released as a standalone installment before the series returns to double episodes later in the season.

The season’s release strategy includes a mix of single and double episode weeks across its full nine-episode run. According to the confirmed schedule, Episode 4, “Robert’s Party,” will also be available on August 12 alongside Episode 3, while Episode 5, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” will air solo on August 19. Episodes 6 and 7, “Homecoming Part One” and “Homecoming Part Two,” will pair up again on August 26.

The nine episodes will be released over six Wednesdays, with the premiere, the August 12 drop, and the August 26 drop each featuring two episodes, while the other three dates will showcase a single episode. This structure means viewers will experience varying wait times between installments, with some weeks offering double the content and others slowing the pace.

For UK viewers watching on Disney+, the schedule follows a similar weekly pattern but is set a day later than the US release. Episodes are expected to be available from around 2 a.m. BST, aligning with the 9 p.m. ET FX and Hulu release in the US, with the season finale confirmed for Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Beyond the rising body count associated with the Trawler, Episode 3’s synopsis hints at new turmoil for Bret’s close-knit friend group. Official details reveal that “a beloved student’s sudden disappearance” will create chaos for the senior class, directly following the Matt Kellner subplot introduced in Episode 2.

Much of the online discussion since the premiere has revolved around whether Robert, portrayed by Homer Gere, is secretly linked to the killings that are terrorizing Buckley’s student body. Bret’s increasing suspicion of his new friend has become the emotional core of the series, and Episode 3 is set to heighten that paranoia as the missing-persons plot expands.

Behind the scenes, the creative team has hinted that the story could extend beyond this single book adaptation if audience response is favorable. Executive producer Brad Simpson mentioned to Radio Times in July that the show is “certainly set up to continue on through their senior year,” indicating that a second season could be on the horizon depending on the performance of the current run.

With the Trawler’s identity still shrouded in mystery and a death cult known as the Riders of the Afterlife lurking in the background as a potential red herring, ‘The Shards’ has numerous threads to explore as it approaches its third hour.
