‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Episode 4 Release Date and Details
Paramount+’s beloved prequel series has been exploring various genres at warp speed this season, transitioning from dinosaurs to psychological horror without pausing for breath. As the crew of the Enterprise barely recovers from a chaotic shore leave, fans are eagerly anticipating what the next chapter will unveil.
Set decades before Captain Kirk assumes command, the series follows Christopher Pike and his crew as they navigate uncharted territories of the galaxy, gradually approaching the events of the original ‘Star Trek’. Season 4 has embraced this mission statement more literally than ever, blending dinosaur encounters, ghost-ship horror, and hallucinatory pleasure planets into its initial episodes.
‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Episode 4, titled “A Case of Chiaroscuro,” is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, August 13, 2026. This episode continues the show’s weekly Thursday rollout that began with the season premiere on July 23. New episodes typically become available at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, or 3 a.m. Eastern Time, a release pattern that has remained consistent throughout the season.
In this episode, Una is mistaken for a resistance leader and finds herself embroiled in a struggle against Klingon occupation, promising a much darker and politically charged narrative than the season’s earlier, lighter installments. The title itself references chiaroscuro, an Italian term that denotes the dramatic contrast between light and dark, often associated with film noir cinematography, suggesting the visual and tonal direction the episode may take.

Episode 4 follows “Human Best Friend,” the season’s third installment, which took the crew to a pleasure planet for some much-needed shore leave that quickly turned perilous as most of the crew awoke with no memories of the previous night. This episode marked a deliberate tonal shift after the season’s darker opening chapters, which included the primordial dinosaur-filled premiere “Valles Marineris” and the psychological horror of “The Griffin Incident,” where an entity aboard the U.S.S. Griffin delved into the minds of Kirk, Spock, and La’an.
This genre-hopping has become a defining characteristic of the season, and “A Case of Chiaroscuro” appears set to continue this trend by replacing horror or comedy with a narrative closer to a wartime thriller. With Rebecca Romijn’s Una at the center of a Klingon occupation storyline, the episode provides one of the show’s most stable characters an opportunity to lead a mission-driven narrative largely on her own.
The season has already confirmed a full ten-episode lineup, with the remaining episodes scheduled to lead up to the finale. After “A Case of Chiaroscuro,” viewers can look forward to Episode 5, “Level-Five Transporter Accident,” on August 20, Episode 6, “Off-Hour,” on August 27, and a series of episodes that will carry the story through September, culminating in the season finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” on September 24.
‘Strange New Worlds’ has already been confirmed for a fifth and final season, which is anticipated to be shorter than previous years at six episodes and will conclude Pike’s crew’s journey while fully transitioning the series into the classic ‘Star Trek’ framework. An exact premiere date for that final season has not yet been announced, but a 2027 release is currently expected.
Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers continue as showrunners for the season, with the returning ensemble cast including Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn, alongside guest appearances from Carol Kane and Paul Wesley as a younger James T. Kirk.
With Una about to be thrust into occupied territory and the Klingon Empire entering the fray, “A Case of Chiaroscuro” promises to be one of the season’s more serious turns yet.
