‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Approaches $1 Billion Overseas, Here’s Why
Sony and Marvel have been on an incredible roll this summer, and their latest installment featuring the web-slinger shows no signs of slowing down. What began as a record-breaking opening weekend has quickly turned into one of the fastest ascents to blockbuster status in box office history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ debuted with an astonishing $355 million domestically and $573 million internationally, totaling $927 million for its opening weekend. This impressive figure ranks just behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in global launch records. Tom Holland’s fourth solo adventure as Spider-Man has continued to break records at a pace that has even the most seasoned box office analysts amazed.
The international rollout has been particularly remarkable, especially with China’s significant contribution to the film’s success. China led all overseas markets with a $121.0 million opening, marking the largest post-COVID launch for a Marvel film in the country. This is a huge turnaround, considering that the previous film, ‘No Way Home’, was never released there. This single market has propelled the film’s total international earnings past $700 million just over a week into its release, putting a billion-dollar overseas total well within reach in the coming days.
Overall, ‘Brand New Day’ crossed the $1 billion mark globally in just six days, making it the second-fastest film to achieve this milestone, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which reached it in five days back in 2019. By its seventh day in theaters, the film had already amassed $1.155 billion worldwide, including $449 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally, officially overtaking ‘Toy Story 5’ as the highest-grossing movie of the year.
That international total highlights how quickly the film is approaching the $1 billion mark overseas on its own. With China contributing a substantial portion of that total and other major markets like the United Kingdom, Mexico, and South Korea also reporting record or near-record openings, the film’s overseas trajectory shows no signs of slowing as it heads into its second weekend.
Beyond the impressive earnings, ‘Brand New Day’ has systematically broken a series of box office records along the way. It set the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in history with $360 million, surpassing ‘Endgame’s previous record of $357.1 million, and became the fastest film to exceed $400 million domestically, achieving this in just four days.

The film has also achieved the highest-grossing Monday in box office history with $47 million, breaking a record previously held by ‘Black Panther’, along with the biggest Tuesday ever at the domestic box office with $42 million. Given its strong performance and expanding international reach, industry analysts now predict that the film could eventually surpass $2 billion globally before its theatrical run concludes, a milestone only seven films in history have ever reached.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman succinctly captured the significance of the moment during opening weekend, quipping, “So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has similarly attributed the film’s success to Spider-Man’s lasting appeal and Holland’s ongoing connection with audiences after four films in the role.
With China continuing to climb and international audiences showing no signs of fatigue, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is poised to become one of the defining box office stories of the year.
