‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Update: Jamie Tartt Exits as Phil Dunster Leaves the Series
‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 was not initially a certainty. Following the conclusion of Season 3, many fans felt the narrative had reached its end, with Ted Lasso returning to Kansas City and leaving AFC Richmond behind. However, a significant event shifted the creators’ perspectives: the rise of England’s women’s football team, the Lionesses.
The Lionesses clinched the UEFA Women’s Championship in 2022 while filming for the third season was underway. Their triumph sparked immense enthusiasm throughout England and highlighted the increasing popularity of women’s football. Co-creator and executive producer Brendan Hunt, who portrays Coach Beard, noted that this moment played a crucial role in inspiring the show’s revival.
“We got to watch in real time as the country went from ‘oh right, yeah, sure, women’s football’ to ‘yes! The Lionesses are the greatest ever!’ because they beat Germany in added time at Wembley,” Hunt shared. He added that the excitement surrounding the team lingered with the creators even after filming concluded, eventually influencing the direction of the new season.
The potential for a women’s AFC Richmond team was hinted at the end of Season 3. Rebecca Welton and Keeley Jones discussed the prospect of adding a women’s team to the club, leaving room for future storylines. Hunt mentioned that this concept became foundational for the series’ return.
“We definitely wanted to leave ourselves a breadcrumb, in case we wanted to find our way back,” Hunt remarked.
The creative team dedicated time to devise a plausible reason for Ted’s return to Richmond after he chose his family at the end of Season 3. Hunt revealed that the writers convened in Ojai, California, for a retreat to explore potential story directions.
“If we came back, what would it be? What could it be?” Hunt said regarding those initial discussions. The team contemplated various ideas, including maintaining the narrative in America, but ultimately decided that London and AFC Richmond were too significant to abandon.

Once the decision was finalized, the writers concentrated on crafting a believable rationale for Ted’s return. The new season kicks off with Ted leading a quiet life in Kansas City, working at a grocery store and spending time with his son. However, it soon becomes evident that something is lacking. When Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins approach him with the opportunity to coach Richmond’s new women’s team, Ted faces a pivotal choice about embracing another significant change.
Hunt explained that the writers aimed to depict Ted’s journey rather than hastily jumping back into football.
“There is a strong TV-making argument for ‘just skip all that! He’s back. Who cares?’ But that’s just not our way,” he stated. The team wanted viewers to grasp the reasoning behind Ted’s major decision.
Season 4 also brings in new characters, including Tanya Reynolds’ Alice Chilton, a coach who is initially unimpressed by Ted. Meanwhile, some familiar faces will embark on new journeys. Jamie Tartt, portrayed by Phil Dunster, will not be returning as his character has moved on to play for FC Barcelona.
Hunt clarified that Jamie’s departure aligns with the storyline, as successful players would naturally transition to larger clubs.
“If this team is doing so well, then the best players would be gone. They’d be bought by bigger clubs,” Hunt explained.
The new season revolves around the theme of taking risks and making unexpected choices. Hunt described the overarching theme as “leap before you look,” emphasizing that sometimes people must take chances to truly progress.
While there is no confirmed plan for additional seasons beyond this one, Hunt expressed optimism about continuing the narrative. “I wouldn’t say that there’s a plan exactly, but there’s definitely crossed fingers,” he noted.
