Marvel’s marketing efforts are in full swing as anticipation builds for one of the studio’s most awaited crossover events. Fans have been eagerly analyzing trailers, toy reveals, and leaked images to uncover how the film’s extensive ensemble cast will be portrayed on screen.

Ian McKellen’s Magneto has been a focal point of this speculation, given his intricate history with the character across various film franchises. Now, that history has finally aligned with a detail that longtime X-Men fans have been eager to see for decades.

Recently, new character art from ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ surfaced online, showcasing Ian McKellen’s Magneto adorned with an X-Men belt buckle, marking the first time his version of the character has donned the team’s emblem since his debut in the original ‘X-Men’ film back in 2000. This reveal concludes a 26-year wait, finally providing McKellen’s Magneto with the comic-accurate detail fans have long desired since the early days of Fox’s X-Men movies.

The newly revealed art showcases the film’s heroes in individual display panels, with Magneto’s section revealing his complete costume: his iconic helmet, a red tunic, and a fur-trimmed cape. This design draws directly from the comics, where Erik Lehnsherr’s red and purple color scheme has characterized the character for years, contrasting sharply with the darker, more subdued costumes McKellen wore in his previous X-Men appearances.

This costume detail aligns with a wave of ‘Doomsday’ merchandise unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, where Hot Toys, Hasbro, and Iron Studios showcased Magneto collectibles featuring the same X-logo buckle, confirming that the design is directly from the film rather than a standalone promotional choice. Hot Toys’ deluxe figure of Magneto includes a tailored long-sleeved tunic, matching pants, tall boots, and a belt with the X-logo buckle, along with a dramatic gray cape lined in burgundy and a newly crafted helmeted head sculpt.

The absence of the X-Men symbol on McKellen’s Magneto has been a subtle yet persistent oversight throughout his portrayal of the character. Michael Fassbender’s younger Magneto briefly wore a comic-accurate suit in ‘X-Men: First Class’, but that choice was abandoned in subsequent films, leaving McKellen’s version without the emblem in any of his appearances in ‘X-Men’, ‘X2: X-Men United’, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, or ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

In addition to the costume itself, some promotional materials hint at Magneto’s potential actions in the upcoming film. The pricier Deluxe Version of the Hot Toys Magneto figure comes with a display base featuring a Sentinel head, suggesting that Magneto may use his powers against the X-Men’s robotic foes at some point in the story.

This detail coincides with exclusive footage presented to San Diego Comic-Con attendees, suggesting that Doctor Doom may be reprogramming Sentinels to confront the film’s heroes, with the robots reportedly featuring glowing green eyes in that unreleased footage. Given Magneto’s long-standing conflict with Sentinel programs throughout X-Men lore, this connection aligns with the character’s established motivations as they transition into the MCU.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and will take place 14 months after the events of ‘Thunderbolts’.
