‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Creator Jokes About Erasing ‘Beyond’ Series Finale
The ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ universe has just wrapped up its latest chapter, and the conclusion has left many fans feeling dissatisfied. After nearly two decades filled with magic, family drama, and Disney Channel nostalgia, viewers anticipated a finale that would honor the franchise’s legacy. However, the finale’s reception has turned out to be more divisive than expected.
‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ ended with a four-part finale event that aired on August 4, 2026, finally addressing the cliffhanger that had been hanging over the show since the end of its second season. This concluding chapter saw the Russo family face off against the villain Nicodemus Penwulf in a climactic battle, revealing a shocking twist regarding Alex Russo’s ex-boyfriend Mason Greyback, whose death was mentioned with little context.
This lack of clarity, along with several unresolved plot points, seems to have frustrated original series creator Todd J. Greenwald enough to voice his thoughts publicly. Following the finale of ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’, Greenwald took to social media with a post that quickly gained traction, stating, “I will undo the entire Beyond canon in one simple chapter. By simply ignoring it. ‘It was all Max’s dream.’ Fixed. Moving on.”
Greenwald’s comment comes amid a wave of fan backlash against the spinoff’s conclusion. Viewers were particularly upset about the unexplained circumstances surrounding Mason’s death and the long-anticipated Wizards Competition, which was referenced but never resolved on-screen. One fan expressed confusion online, stating the storyline “wasn’t addressed (?) or it was addressed but never happened,” suggesting that the show felt rushed in its final season.

The finale also aired without the appearances of two beloved characters from the original series, as Jake T. Austin and David DeLuise were absent from the final season. This absence left many longtime fans questioning why they were not included in such a significant send-off. Coupled with the unresolved storylines, the reaction on social media illustrated a fanbase yearning for closure but left with more questions than answers.

Despite the backlash, the four-part conclusion did provide a full-circle ending for the Russo family, concluding with Alex, Justin, their spouses, and children, along with Theresa, gathered together at the family’s Waverly Place sub shop for a heartfelt final scene.
David Henrie, who portrays Justin, has defended some of the more controversial choices made in the finale, including the earlier Season 2 reveal that Alex was secretly Billie’s biological mother. Henrie noted that fans were outraged at the time, explaining, “When we revealed that Alex had a kid in the second season, fans were furious because, obviously, that kid can’t come from Gregg. She had to have some sort of ethnic mix that would make up the way she looks, and clearly that’s not coming from this British dude.”
The series finale did provide at least one silver lining for devoted fans of the original show’s central friendship, as Alex’s alternate-dimension reunion with best friend Harper ultimately inspired the two to reconnect for real once everything settled. This detail has somewhat softened the disappointment for viewers still processing the unresolved aspects of the finale.
With ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ now officially concluded and its creator humorously suggesting a clean slate, the future of the franchise remains uncertain, even as its nearly two-decade legacy across seven combined seasons continues to resonate.
