When the original ‘Avengers‘ team decided to commemorate their time together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with tattoos, five of the six stars eagerly participated. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner all left the tattoo parlor with matching designs, but Mark Ruffalo was notably absent, leaving fans curious about his decision.

The reason behind the Hulk actor’s absence from this bonding experience has become a cherished piece of MCU trivia, and the reality is surprisingly straightforward compared to various fan theories.

The tattoo tradition began during the production of ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ when the cast wanted to celebrate their shared experience. After filming wrapped, the original Avengers cast took a break to get matching tattoos, a concept that reportedly originated with Scarlett Johansson, who felt it was important for the team to have a lasting reminder of their journey together.

The tattoos themselves hold deeper significance than just a logo. The design combines the number six with the Avengers logo, symbolizing the original six heroes who formed the backbone of the franchise. The final artwork creatively merged elements from each character into a single line graphic resembling the letter A.

Robert Downey Jr later shared more details about how the tattoo day unfolded, explaining the order in which the group got their tattoos and revealing that Mark Ruffalo ultimately chose not to participate. This moment has since become a running joke among the cast, one that has followed Ruffalo through numerous press tours.

For years, fans speculated about Ruffalo’s absence from the tattoo group photo, but the actor eventually clarified the situation himself. During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ in 2018, Ruffalo explained that he opted out for a couple of reasons.

The primary reason was refreshingly simple: a fear of needles. Ruffalo confirmed on the show that the thought of the needle was enough to deter him from getting inked.

However, that wasn’t his only excuse. Ruffalo also humorously pointed out that nearly everyone has tattoos these days, framing his choice to remain ink-free as a bit of a punk rock statement. This comment has often been interpreted as a lighthearted justification, with his fear of needles being the real reason.

Fans and commentators alike have found the situation amusing, particularly given his role as the Hulk. The irony of the actor who portrays the strongest Avenger being hesitant about a small needle prick has become a memorable piece of trivia among the cast.

The rest of the original six have never let Ruffalo forget his decision, and their playful teasing resurfaced years later on national television. During an ‘Avengers: Endgame’ press event on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Downey Jr, Johansson, Paul Rudd, and Chris Hemsworth ribbed their co-star for opting out.

Downey Jr was particularly candid, suggesting that Ruffalo’s decision was made at his own risk, and when asked if that was why Ruffalo was absent from that interview, Downey Jr joked that they were not some kind of psycho marine squad.

Johansson took the opportunity to reveal the fear of needles explanation to the group, noting that Ruffalo hadn’t shared that reasoning at the time he declined. She mentioned that Ruffalo’s initial refusal had come across as him being judgmental about the idea. Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t resist making a joke of his own, laughing that the Hulk himself was apparently afraid of needles.

Despite years of lighthearted ribbing, there has always been a possibility for Ruffalo to change his mind. At the time, it was noted that he still had the chance to get the tattoo before the next ‘Avengers’ film and could always opt for a private session to avoid watching the needle work.

As of now, that change has not occurred, and Ruffalo seems content to remain the only holdout among his ‘Avengers’ co-stars. Given how much fun the cast has had teasing him about it, this ongoing joke may be more valuable to their chemistry than a matching tattoo ever could have been.

With Marvel’s next major team-up on the horizon, fans are left wondering if Ruffalo will ever decide to join his castmates at the tattoo parlor, or if his fear of needles will keep the Hulk the only original Avenger without permanent proof of the team. What do you think? Should Ruffalo finally get the ink before the next ‘Avengers’ movie hits theaters, or has this joke gone on long enough to leave it as is?
