Westeros has expanded significantly beyond the original HBO series, introducing prequels, spinoffs, and companion shows that have captivated audiences. However, one intriguing aspect of Targaryen history has remained largely unexplored—until now.

Warner Bros. Discovery has officially announced ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ as a theatrical film set in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe, with a release planned for sometime after 2027. This marks the franchise’s inaugural venture into George R.R. Martin’s expansive fantasy world on the big screen.

This confirmation was part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s larger slate announcement, which highlighted the project as leveraging “iconic intellectual property” alongside other significant upcoming releases, including the next ‘Matrix’ installment, a new Batman film, and a live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie featuring Jim Carrey. This positioning underscores the studio’s commitment to expanding the ‘Thrones’ universe.

Beau Willimon, renowned for his work as the showrunner of Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’ and as a writer on Disney+’s ‘Andor,’ has been tasked with writing the screenplay since the project was first reported. Earlier reports from Page Six Hollywood indicated that Willimon had submitted a completed draft by March 2026, which was strong enough to secure the film’s place on Warner Bros.’ official slate.

The film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror, and his efforts to unite the Seven Kingdoms alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys. This conquest occurred approximately 300 years before the events of the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series, providing ample opportunity to delve into the origins of the Iron Throne without conflicting with existing storylines.

Warner Bros. first hinted at the project’s title during its CinemaCon presentation in April, confirming ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ as part of its “2027 and beyond” slate. This announcement followed years of discussions, with HBO considering an Aegon-centered prequel as early as 2023, including the possibility of a companion television series that could accompany a feature film.

Industry insiders have described the project as being envisioned as “a mammoth, Dune-sized feature film,” reflecting the ambition of bringing a full continental conquest to theaters rather than limiting it to television. Some reports have also mentioned screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on ‘The Batman,’ as a potential contributor, although he has not been officially attached alongside Willimon.

As of now, no casting details have been disclosed for the film’s key roles, including Aegon, Visenya, or Rhaenys. Given that the project is still years away from release and with Warner Bros.’ ownership situation remaining somewhat uncertain amid speculation about a possible Paramount Skydance acquisition, further concrete details are likely to take time to emerge.

For a franchise that has already demonstrated its appetite for prequels through ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ bringing the Targaryen dynasty’s founding story to theaters seems like a natural progression. Whether ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ can effectively translate that same intricate political intrigue to the big screen remains one of the most intriguing questions for the franchise’s future.
