Emma Heming Willis Shares Engagement to Another Before Meeting Bruce Willis
Hollywood love stories often take unexpected turns, and the journey of Bruce and Emma Heming Willis is no different. Their nearly two-decade relationship has faced public scrutiny, a global pandemic, and more recently, one of the most publicly documented health journeys in the industry. Throughout it all, Emma has continued to share insights into their story with fans.
This year, Emma has opened up more about their early days together, providing fans with a glimpse into a chapter of their relationship that predates the life they built together. Her reflections reveal a much more complex and relatable narrative than the typical polished celebrity romance.
In her new memoir, ‘The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,’ Emma disclosed that she was engaged to someone else when she first met Bruce in 2005 at celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson’s Hollywood gym. She described feeling like a “hot, sweaty mess” after her workout, not exactly eager to meet anyone new when Peterson called her over for introductions.
According to Emma, that seemingly mundane introduction held significant meaning for Bruce. “Was it love at first sight? No, not at all,” she wrote. “At the time, I was engaged. I didn’t think much of the interaction.” However, Bruce reportedly turned to Peterson after she walked away and declared, “I’m going to marry that girl one day.”
That prediction took nearly four years to materialize, with the couple marrying on March 21, 2009. In comments to PEOPLE about their relationship, Emma noted how charming and funny Bruce was, along with being “extremely handsome,” a sentiment Bruce echoed by stating he was already in love with her.
Emma has shared more about how their connection developed once they began spending time together. On the Conversations With Cam podcast, she admitted she wasn’t a fan of his work before their meeting, having only seen him in ‘Armageddon’ and watched ‘Moonlighting’ during her upbringing without closely following his broader film career.
Their actual first date was rather unremarkable, made even more awkward by her decision to bring a friend along to help her “suss things out.” It wasn’t until they began talking on the phone for hours and Bruce invited her to his vacation home in Turks and Caicos that their relationship shifted into something more serious.
The couple has since built a life together, welcoming two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, while Emma also plays the role of stepmother to Bruce’s three daughters from his previous marriage to Demi Moore. Emma has been open about their relationship, especially following Bruce’s frontotemporal dementia diagnosis in February 2023, describing their bond as having grown stronger through the challenges they face together.
For a couple whose story began with a sweaty gym encounter and an engagement to someone else, Bruce’s immediate certainty about their future together feels like a rare kind of Hollywood romance. Nearly 20 years later, Emma’s willingness to share those early, imperfect details makes their long partnership feel more authentic.
