Netflix’s treasure-hunting teen drama has spent six years transforming a scrappy group of North Carolina friends into one of streaming’s most dedicated fanbases, built on a captivating mix of buried gold, perilous foes, and just enough teenage romance to maintain the drama. This formula is now approaching its final chapter.

Fans have been aware since June that the fifth season would conclude the series, but excitement has surged as the actual return date draws near. This week, a new trailer was released, showcasing just how far the Pogues are prepared to go before it all comes to an end.

The final trailer for ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 has dropped, confirming that the last season will premiere on Netflix on August 20, with all 10 episodes available for binge-watching at once, unlike the split-season format used for the fourth installment. The trailer picks up immediately after the intense finale of Season 4, which saw Chandler Groff take his own son, JJ, right in front of Kiara.

This tragic loss becomes the emotional backbone of the entire final season. According to Netflix’s official logline, Season 5 finds the Pogues at their breaking point following JJ’s death in Morocco, stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew while still grappling with the loss of the Blue Crown, the legendary treasure believed to have the power to bring the dead back to life.

The trailer opens on a notably grim note, with Sarah telling John B, “This feels like rock bottom,” to which he responds, “This is rock bottom.” The footage then shifts to the group’s resolve to fight back, hinting at a mission centered around reclaiming the Blue Crown while facing a growing list of adversaries, including Chandler Groff, Dalia, the Corsairs, and the ever-complex Kooks.

Series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke have expressed the emotional weight of concluding the show, telling Tudum, “We are over the moon to be setting out on one last trip with the Pogues. Being back on set with our cast for this final round is nothing short of bittersweet and surreal.”

Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, and Drew Starkey are all set to return for the finale, alongside the show’s signature blend of high-stakes action and treasure-hunting mystery. According to Netflix’s description, this season promises to be the most explosive yet, featuring motorcycle jumps off cliffs and dirt bike chases against flying planes.

In anticipation of the season’s release, Netflix is hosting “Pogues for Life: A Fan Farewell Event” in Los Angeles on August 15, which will include a cast conversation, the inaugural fan-voted awards show called the Pogue Awards, and an advance screening of the season premiere for attendees, with a livestream available on Tudum for fans unable to attend in person.

For a series that has built its identity around treasure hunts, found family, and increasingly ambitious set pieces, sending the Pogues off with their biggest and most dangerous mission yet feels like a fitting way to conclude the story. Whether they will finally locate the Blue Crown, and what it might signify for the friends they have already lost, remains the final mystery to unravel before August 20.
