Tom Holland Reveals the Surprisingly Gross Worst Part of Wearing His Spider-Man Suit
Playing Spider-Man comes with numerous glamorous benefits, including record-breaking box office earnings and a dedicated global fanbase that has supported Tom Holland throughout nearly a decade in the role. However, the physically uncomfortable reality of wearing the suit for extended periods is often overlooked.
This reality was candidly addressed during the promotional tour for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ where Holland and his co-stars participated in a round of questions with IMDb. Among the lighter revelations was a detail that fans might not have considered while admiring the character’s sleek red-and-blue costume on screen.
When asked about the experience of wearing the Spidey suit for 12 hours a day, Holland was refreshingly honest. “The worst thing is definitely the smell,” he shared with a laugh. “You know, like, I’m not going to shy away from it. You spend 12 hours in that thing in a deep lunge, jumping up and down all day.”
This level of physical demand aligns with the extensive stunt work Holland undertook for this installment. He has previously mentioned that the most challenging sequences to film were those involving being upside down. During a game where the cast posed questions to each other about the shoot, Sadie Sink referred to a specific gag as “a mess,” while Zendaya admitted it was “a big pass” for her.
Beyond the physical discomfort, Holland also discussed the thoughtful design process behind the suit. He revealed that during pre-production, he tried on both Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s original Spider-Man costumes, collaborating with the costume department and director Destin Daniel Cretton to explore what made each previous design memorable.
“The idea behind the design of the suit was to try and make an homage to the things we loved about those original costumes,” Holland explained, linking the new look to the legacy of the actors who came before him, a fitting choice considering his character’s history crossing timelines with both Maguire and Garfield in ‘No Way Home.’
Holland also noted that his two predecessors likely had it easier logistically due to differences in how their suits were constructed compared to his current ones. While he didn’t delve into specific engineering details, his comment highlighted the significant physical strain he has endured in his portrayal of the character over the years.

For a franchise that has spent years showcasing Holland’s commitment to the physical demands of the role, this latest revelation provides an unglamorous glimpse behind the scenes. Between the smell, the stunts, and the hours spent in a deep lunge, it’s evident that achieving an effortless appearance on screen requires significant effort behind the curtain.
