‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Season 5 Finale Recap: Raq’s Story Concludes
After five seasons filled with shifting allegiances and escalating violence, ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ has officially wrapped up its narrative within the ‘Power’ universe. The Starz prequel chronicled Kanan Stark’s evolution from a teenager caught between conflicting worlds to the shrewd character fans first encountered in the original series, and its conclusion had significant ground to cover.
The final episodes built toward an inevitable confrontation between Kanan and his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas. This tension intensified following the penultimate episode, titled “Penultimate Means Second to Last,” where Kanan killed his uncle Marvin in a church, marking the second uncle he eliminated this season.
When the series finale, titled ‘Unconditional Love,’ aired, Raq’s control over Queens had been entirely dismantled. Ultimately, Raq does not survive, and the closing scene depicts Kanan seated in an armchair, gazing down at his mother’s lifeless body on the floor. Interestingly, he did not pull the trigger; that responsibility fell to Jukebox.
Before her demise, Raq had options. The Feds proposed a deal for her to testify against Stefano and Pino Bernardi in exchange for immunity, which she was willing to accept, but only if Kanan agreed to enter witness protection with her. Kanan declined, and Raq refused to abandon her son to face the consequences alone.
Marvin’s death set Jukebox on a path of no return. After discovering from a letter left by her father that Kanan was responsible, and realizing he had also killed her other uncle, Lou, earlier in the season, Jukebox sought guidance from Flossie on how to proceed.

Instead of confronting Kanan directly, Jukebox opted for a more painful form of justice. By killing Raq, she inflicted a wound on Kanan that would hurt him far more than if she had killed him directly, severing the last connection he was unwilling to cut even as he dismantled the rest of his family.
Kanan’s own efforts to protect his mother contributed to the tragedy. He persuaded Stefano to spare Raq’s life on the condition that she eliminate Pino Bernardi herself, a task that ultimately did not provide her the escape she sought.
The finale also introduced a significant personal development for Kanan, as his ex, Jarita, revealed she is pregnant with his child. She clarified that this news was not an attempt to rekindle their relationship, leaving Kanan to grapple with this revelation amid the chaos surrounding him.
An after-credits scene took viewers back to the day Kanan was born, featuring Raq, Lou, Marvin, and a baby Jukebox all gathered at the hospital. This moment served as a poignant bookend to a season characterized by the disintegration of that same family.
In another moment from the finale, Kanan encountered two thirteen-year-olds named James and Tommy, dismissing them as too young to work for him and telling them to return once they had outgrown Happy Meals. This serves as a clear setup for ‘Power: Origins,’ the franchise’s upcoming installment, which will explore the younger versions of Tommy and Ghost as they build their empire.
For Patina Miller, filming Raq’s final moments held special significance offscreen. Reflecting on the experience while mourning the sudden loss of her brother, she described the process as overwhelming, according to TV Insider.
Showrunner Sascha Penn has emphasized that this conclusion was planned from the show’s initial pitch rather than being shaped by last-minute changes, lending the finale a sense of inevitability that long-time viewers had anticipated since Lou-Lou’s death earlier in the season. With ‘Raising Kanan’ now concluded, all eyes are on how ‘Power: Origins’ will continue the story from this point.
