‘Labubu’ has transformed from a niche collectible into a global sensation, appearing on designer handbags and in celebrity Instagram posts. The adorable, rabbit-eared plush toys from Pop Mart have become so popular that a movie adaptation seemed inevitable.

This adaptation is now officially in the works, with Sony Pictures and Pop Mart collaborating on a feature film that will combine live-action and CGI. Directed by Paul King, known for his work on the ‘Paddington’ franchise and ‘Wonka,’ the project is still in early development, and a release date has yet to be announced.

Recent insights reveal that the film’s narrative will delve deeper than mere cuteness. Co-writer Simon Farnaby has shared that the story will explore the origins of these creatures, drawing inspiration from Nordic mythology.

Farnaby, who has previously collaborated with King on both ‘Paddington’ and ‘Wonka,’ expressed his fascination with the lore surrounding the toys after creator Kasing Lung personally introduced him to it. He described a heartfelt backstory about the characters’ origins, which he and King believe could lead to a touching and beautiful narrative, as reported by Variety.

Farnaby’s involvement signifies a shift from the film’s initial writing plans, which included Steven Levenson, known for ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ and ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ He has stepped in due to King’s immediate commitments to a Tom Holland-led Fred Astaire biopic.

Although the project is still in its infancy, the collaboration between King and Farnaby suggests a strong creative synergy is at play. Farnaby has candidly admitted that his first impression of the toys was not particularly reverent, describing them as the type of toys that girls might attach to their backpacks before understanding the deeper mythology.

‘Labubu’ originated from Kasing Lung’s illustrated book series ‘The Monsters,’ which the Hong Kong-born artist launched in 2015, inspired by Nordic folklore. In this universe, Labubu serves as a forest elf, part of a larger ensemble of mischievous yet kindhearted creatures who embark on fantastical adventures throughout Lung’s stories.

This rich mythology provides ample material for the upcoming film, which aims to go beyond merely replicating the toy’s iconic appearance. Lung will serve as an executive producer on the movie, ensuring that the character’s original creative vision is maintained as it transitions from picture books and blind-box figurines to a full theatrical experience.

Producers Michael Schaefer, known for ‘The Martian,’ and Wenxin She, who worked on ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,’ are also attached to the film alongside King. This production team combines seasoned Hollywood storytellers with the character’s original creator, a strategy designed to keep the film rooted in Labubu’s origins while appealing to a global audience.

With Pop Mart’s valuation soaring to nearly $40 billion, surpassing long-established toy giant Mattel, the pressure to translate this success into a captivating film is significant. If Farnaby and King’s instincts regarding the character’s Nordic-inspired backstory prove accurate, ‘Labubu’ could emerge as a unique toy movie that defies audience expectations.
