Marvel Studios’ ‘X-Men‘ reboot stands as one of the most closely guarded projects on the studio’s agenda, with fans eagerly analyzing every piece of casting news for months. As the film approaches the assembly of its cast, the quest for the actor to portray Professor X has become a focal point in the entire process.

This search has generated considerable buzz, with names rising and falling in speculation. Recently, Bill Skarsgård has been a prominent figure in discussions about the role, although reports have approached this rumor with a degree of skepticism.

Now, more definitive information has surfaced regarding the actors who auditioned for the part. According to reporting from The Hollywood Reporter’s newsletter, both Christopher Abbott and Tom Pelphrey tested for the role of Professor X, with Pelphrey confirmed to have missed out. Abbott’s status remains uncertain, keeping him in the running alongside the possibility of an unnamed dark horse candidate.

This uncertainty aligns with the pattern observed during this casting process. Both Emma Frost and Cyclops were ultimately cast with actors who were not part of the initial rumor cycle, as Samara Weaving and Kit Connor secured those roles after names like Asa Germann and Cooper Hoffman were considered and ultimately passed over for Cyclops.

The competition for the role of Professor X reportedly extended beyond just Abbott and Pelphrey. Marvel has been described as testing nearly every actor in a similar age range for this role, emphasizing the importance the studio places on making the right casting choice.

Abbott brings a unique background to the table as a Tony nominee, while Pelphrey has garnered attention for his performance in ‘Task.’ Both actors represent a different direction compared to the more star-studded names that circulated earlier, indicating that Marvel may be focusing on a specific tone or performance style for Charles Xavier rather than just star power.

Further complicating the situation, Adam Driver has been rumored for various villain roles throughout the casting process, including Magneto, Mister Sinister, and most recently Sebastian Shaw, all within a single month. While Driver is not directly linked to Professor X, the ongoing speculation surrounding his potential role highlights the fluidity and uncertainty of the entire casting landscape.

With Disney’s D23 event scheduled to take place in Anaheim from August 14 through 16, speculation has intensified that Marvel might utilize the Disney Entertainment Showcase to announce more of its ‘X-Men’ cast. Multiple trade outlets have pointed to this date as a likely moment for a significant reveal, though Marvel Studios has yet to confirm anything.

The stakes surrounding this reboot go beyond mere fan interest. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that the mutants will be entirely recast following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ with the film not expected to debut until 2028, well after ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ conclude the current saga.

This timeline means any casting announcement at D23 would come years before the movie’s actual release, an unusually early strategy even by Marvel’s standards for building anticipation. Whether Christopher Abbott ultimately secures the role of Professor X or another name emerges from the shadows, the studio seems committed to ensuring its new mutant team feels thoughtfully selected rather than hurried.
