Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself by defying box office expectations, consistently transforming complex films into must-see events. From intricate heist thrillers to lengthy explorations of scientific concepts, audiences have flocked to theaters whenever his name is featured.

His latest venture, an R-rated, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, initially seemed like a project that could challenge even his most loyal fans. However, it has emerged as one of the year’s most successful theatrical releases, gaining traction each weekend instead of diminishing.

In just 25 days since its release, ‘The Odyssey’ has officially become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film, breaking into the all-time top 40 highest-grossing movies in box office history and surpassing ‘Skyfall’ in the process.

The film’s international performance has been particularly impressive as it heads into its fourth weekend, amassing approximately $79 million overseas with a minimal decline of under 5 percent. This is a remarkable feat compared to the significant post-opening drops seen in films like ‘Barbie’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ A significant contributor to this success has been its strong debut in South Korea, where ‘The Odyssey’ opened at number one, achieving Nolan’s largest career opening in that market, even surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

With this international success, ‘The Odyssey’ has now accumulated over $640 million globally across more than 80 markets, all without including China or Japan, which are expected to open soon. This indicates that the film’s international total still has considerable potential for growth.

With a domestic total now exceeding $461 million, ‘The Odyssey’ has pushed its worldwide gross past $1.1 billion, officially marking it as Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. This total surpasses ‘The Dark Knight,’ which concluded its run around $1.003 billion, ‘Joker,’ which finished near $1.074 billion, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ previously Nolan’s highest at approximately $1.081 billion.

This milestone is particularly impressive given the film’s $250 million production budget, excluding marketing, and its R rating, both of which typically limit a film’s potential at the global box office. ‘The Odyssey’ now ranks as the second-highest-grossing R-rated film ever, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Additionally, ‘The Odyssey’ has become the second-highest-grossing film of the year so far, surpassing ‘Toy Story 5’s’ total of around $1.09 billion. Notably, the film has now entered the all-time top 40 highest-grossing movies, overtaking ‘Skyfall’s’ lifetime total of approximately $1.1 billion to claim the 39th position on the global chart.

Achieving this status in less than a month of release is a rare accomplishment, especially for a film based on a centuries-old epic poem rather than a well-known franchise or comic book. This success highlights both Nolan’s enduring box office appeal and the format-driven theatrical strategy, including a significant IMAX push, that has characterized the film’s marketing from the outset.

With China and Japan still on the horizon for release, industry predictions suggest that ‘The Odyssey’ could ultimately reach between $1.4 billion and $1.5 billion worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Given the film’s consistent performance beyond expectations at every stage of its release, this estimate may turn out to be conservative.

For a film many believed would struggle due to its length, rating, and absence of franchise recognition, ‘The Odyssey’ has instead emerged as one of the standout box office narratives of the year.
