‘Verity’ Trailer Unveils Colleen Hoover’s Dark Bestseller as a Psychological Thriller
Colleen Hoover has cultivated a passionate fanbase in contemporary publishing, and Hollywood is taking notice. Following the tremendous success of ‘It Ends with Us,’ studios are eager to adapt more of her novels, and now one of her darkest and most controversial works is set to make its cinematic debut.
‘Verity‘ has been in the works for several months, generating excitement with a teaser released back in April that hinted at the unsettling narrative. This initial glimpse featured Dakota Johnson’s character entering a dimly lit mansion, with minimal dialogue hinting at the eerie situation she was stepping into.
Amazon MGM Studios has now unveiled the full trailer for ‘Verity,’ providing fans with their best look yet at the psychological thriller ahead of its theatrical release on October 2. The film adapts Hoover’s best-selling novel and stars Anne Hathaway as the enigmatic title character, Verity Crawford, alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
The plot centers on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer portrayed by Johnson, who is tasked with completing the final novel in a highly successful book series after its author, Verity Crawford, is left unable to walk or speak due to a tragic accident. Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, invites Lowen into their family home to finish his wife’s unfinished work, but the arrangement proves far more complicated than it appears.
Once inside the Crawford estate, Lowen uncovers what seems to be Verity’s private manuscript, filled with disturbing autobiographical revelations that challenge everything she believed about the family she is living with. The trailer emphasizes this sense of unease, with the sound of Verity’s wheelchair becoming a haunting motif throughout.
Jeremy informs Lowen that doctors doubt his wife will ever walk or talk again, a detail the trailer suggests will have more significance than it initially appears. He also mentions that Verity referred to Lowen as a “brilliant, undiscovered voice” and the only writer capable of completing the series, creating a dynamic where Lowen becomes increasingly intertwined with both Verity’s unfinished work and Jeremy himself.
This blurring of fiction and reality has always been a key element of what makes Hoover’s novel so unsettling, and the trailer implies that director Michael Showalter is fully embracing that tension rather than softening it for broader appeal. Themes of manipulation, obsession, and attraction seem to be intricately woven into Lowen’s deepening connection with the Crawford family, reflecting the psychological unraveling that resonated with thriller enthusiasts.
‘Verity’ arrives at a time when adaptations of Hoover’s works are becoming a notable box office phenomenon, especially following the cultural buzz generated by ‘It Ends with Us’ last year. With Hathaway, Johnson, and Hartnett lending their considerable star power, expectations for this adaptation are significantly higher than your average book-to-film thriller.
The trailer also highlights a notably busy period for Hathaway, who has featured in several major releases this year, adding yet another prominent role to her already packed 2026. Whether ‘Verity’ can capture the same excitement that made Hoover’s novel a viral hit remains to be seen, but the trailer indicates that the film is not shying away from the story’s darker, more twisted aspects.
With ‘Verity’ set to hit theaters worldwide on October 2, fans of the novel will finally have the chance to see if the screen adaptation lives up to the book’s sinister reputation.
