Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Expands Role in DC’s Upcoming Projects
Nathan Fillion has quietly established himself as a pivotal figure in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, appearing as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in a growing array of projects since the character’s live-action debut. What began as a minor role in this summer’s ‘Superman’ has rapidly evolved into a significant presence within the franchise.
Fillion first introduced Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s ‘Superman,’ released in July, marking his live-action debut as the loud and brash Green Lantern after years of voicing Hal Jordan in various animated DC productions. Since then, Fillion’s role has expanded, with confirmation that he will reprise Guy Gardner in HBO’s upcoming ‘Lanterns’ series alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart.
The momentum continues to build, as showrunner Tom King has announced that Fillion’s Guy Gardner will also feature in DC Studios’ forthcoming adult animated series ‘Mister Miracle,’ adding yet another layer to the character’s presence in the studio’s interconnected universe.
‘Mister Miracle’ is based on the acclaimed 12-issue comic series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, with King serving as both showrunner and executive producer. The series follows Scott Free, known as Mister Miracle, as he attempts to escape death itself after his adoptive father Darkseid captures the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon that grants total dominance over the universe.

Guy Gardner’s expanding role aligns perfectly with DC Studios’ strategy of creating an interconnected universe under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran. By integrating supporting characters across film, television, and animation, they are enhancing the narrative depth of the franchise. Fillion’s portrayal of the character exemplifies this approach, showcasing how quickly his role has evolved since his initial appearance.
This growth also carries historical significance. Guy Gardner was originally intended to lead the ‘Lanterns’ series during its early development, with actor Finn Wittrock initially cast before the project underwent substantial changes. Fillion’s casting as Guy Gardner marks a full-circle moment for the character’s connection to the series, even as the focus shifted to Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
‘Mister Miracle’ was officially greenlit by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios at the Annecy Animation Festival, positioned as an adult-oriented addition to the studio’s animation lineup. While a release window and network for the series have yet to be announced, production is reportedly already in progress.
With Fillion’s Guy Gardner confirmed in ‘Superman,’ ‘Lanterns,’ and ‘Mister Miracle,’ the character has quickly become one of the most prominent supporting figures in DC Studios’ current slate. This reinforces the importance of interconnectivity in Gunn and Safran’s vision for the franchise. For fans who have followed Fillion’s extensive history voicing various Green Lanterns in DC’s animated works, witnessing him take on a live-action and now expanded animated role adds an extra layer of appreciation to the casting.
As DC Studios continues to unveil projects across film, television, and animation, Guy Gardner’s growing presence indicates a strong commitment to recurring characters that help weave the universe together.
