‘American Horror Story‘ has dedicated fifteen years to cultivating one of television’s most passionate horror fanbases, exploring haunted houses, witch covens, freak shows, and apocalyptic cults while featuring a rotating cast of actors who continually return. As the anthology approaches its thirteenth season, Ryan Murphy has hinted for months that this installment would be unlike anything the franchise has ever attempted.

The anticipation began subtly, with Instagram teasers emerging as production kicked off earlier this year. These included a glimpse of Jessica Lange at a window and confirmation that Sarah Paulson and Emma Roberts would reprise their roles from ‘Coven.’ These hints sparked months of speculation that Season 13 would serve as a direct sequel to the beloved ‘Coven’ storyline, especially after Murphy revealed that Miss Robichaux’s Academy had been completely rebuilt for the new season.

Now, the first official trailer has dropped, confirming that the season will exceed fans’ expectations. Titled simply ’13,’ the new season is set to premiere on September 24 on FX and Hulu, streaming globally on Disney+, and features one of the largest ensembles of returning franchise veterans the show has ever gathered.

Rather than being a straightforward ‘Coven’ sequel, Murphy has described the new season as an Avengers-style crossover, uniting characters from across the anthology’s entire history into a single, cohesive narrative. Evan Peters has referred to the season internally as a greatest-hits collection, highlighting the numerous past storylines and characters being integrated into this installment.

The returning cast includes Sarah Paulson reprising her role as Cordelia Goode from ‘Coven,’ alongside Jessica Lange, who returns to the franchise for the first time since 2018’s ‘Apocalypse.’ They are joined by longtime series regulars Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, and Leslie Grossman, as well as newcomers John Waters, Joey Pollari, Paul Anthony Kelly, Alex Consani, and Madelaine Petsch making their franchise debuts.

Paulson’s return is particularly significant, given her previous comments about wanting to revisit Cordelia to explore how her character’s powers may have evolved over time. With Robichaux Academy confirmed to be rebuilt and the Coven’s mythology central to the new season, it seems her wish is finally being realized nearly a decade later.

The thirteen-episode structure of the season also carries thematic significance beyond just its title, directly linking to the number that has haunted the franchise’s mythology since its inception. According to the official logline, this new installment aims to honor what’s often referred to as everyone’s most feared number, positioning this chapter as a culmination of the anthology’s fifteen-year journey.

With over 700 million hours of the franchise streamed worldwide and more than 100 Emmy nominations since its debut in 2011, ‘American Horror Story’ has established itself as one of television’s most enduring horror properties. This new trailer, combined with the scale of the returning cast, indicates that Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk are treating Season 13 as a true celebration of everything the anthology has accomplished rather than just another standalone chapter.

For longtime fans who have journeyed with the show through haunted houses, asylums, and apocalyptic covens, witnessing so many beloved characters reunite on screen marks a significant moment in the franchise’s history.
