Horror enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating a glimpse into Jason Voorhees’ origins, and that wait is finally nearing its conclusion. ‘Crystal Lake,’ the long-awaited prequel series to ‘Friday the 13th,’ was initially ordered in October 2022 but faced several challenges before coming together under its current creative team.

This journey included the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller in 2024, with ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ creator Brad Caleb Kane stepping in as the series’ new creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Produced by A24 for Peacock, the eight-episode drama has gradually unveiled details about its cast and storyline leading up to its release.

Peacock has now released the first official posters for ‘Crystal Lake,’ confirming that all eight episodes will premiere on October 15, perfectly timed for the Halloween season. The artwork heavily features iconic imagery from the franchise, hinting at Jason’s connection to the narrative and highlighting Pamela Voorhees as the central character.

Linda Cardellini takes on the role of Pamela, originally portrayed by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 classic, making her the franchise’s first killer. The series is set before the events of the original film, focusing on Pamela as she grapples with the grief of losing her young son, Jason, who drowned in Crystal Lake nearly a year prior. Her life takes a turn when two strangers arrive in town, probing into her past.

Cardellini previously shared with Deadline that Pamela is a significant yet largely unexplored character in the franchise, and she finds the opportunity to delve into her backstory exciting. She credited Kane for crafting a diverse range of ideas for the character, describing the material as emotionally varied yet consistently engaging.

Joining Cardellini in the main cast are William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, with young Jason Voorhees portrayed by Callum Vinson. The recurring cast includes Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik, creating a fresh ensemble tailored for the show’s original storyline.

The directing duties are shared throughout the season, with Michael Lennox directing the first three episodes, Celine Held and Logan George taking on episodes four through six, and Quyen Tran concluding the season with the final two episodes. This structure suggests a purposeful shift in tone or pacing as Pamela’s narrative builds towards the events familiar to audiences from the original 1980 film.

The newly released posters heighten anticipation, with one teasing the tagline “Before Jason” and another emphasizing Pamela’s role with the phrase “There was Pamela.” This reinforces the show’s focus as a genuine origin story rather than a mere slasher reboot. By centering the narrative on Pamela’s unraveling before Jason’s existence, the series marks a notable tonal shift for the franchise.

With the premiere date confirmed and a fresh wave of promotional material generating excitement, ‘Crystal Lake’ is poised to offer horror fans one of the more psychologically driven entries the franchise has seen in years.
