Christopher Judge Clarifies He’s Not Pursuing Kratos Role in Amazon’s ‘God of War’
Christopher Judge has spent years shaping the character of Kratos for millions of gamers, lending his voice to the God of War during the acclaimed Norse era in both the 2018 reboot and its 2022 sequel, ‘Ragnarok.’ His performance garnered him a Game Award for Best Performance, solidifying his reputation as one of the most respected voice actors in gaming. This makes his recent comments regarding Amazon’s live-action adaptation particularly significant for a fanbase eager to see how the show will interpret its cherished source material.
During a recent panel at Fan Expo, Judge openly criticized the approach studios take toward video game adaptations. He specifically pointed out both Amazon’s upcoming ‘God of War’ series and HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ for not involving the original creators of the games. His remarks quickly gained traction online, igniting discussions among fans about the implications of his statements.
This sparked speculation that Judge’s criticism might stem from a personal wish to portray Kratos in the live-action series, especially since he will not be reprising the role on screen. In response to a fan who suggested he was advocating for the hiring of the original writers and developers, Judge clarified that his comments were aimed at the industry’s writers and developers rather than a push for his own casting.
In his response, Judge humorously acknowledged that his age might be a barrier to taking on the physical role, joking that his kids remind him he’s “old as balls.” He expressed hope that whoever steps into the role of Kratos achieves the same success that actor Ryan Hurst had before an on-set injury necessitated a recasting. Judge emphasized that his main concern is ensuring that the writers and developers of beloved games receive the recognition they deserve, a sentiment he believes should extend across the entire industry.

Judge’s original comments at Fan Expo highlighted a broader trend he perceives in video game adaptations. He noted that when Amazon’s ‘God of War’ series was greenlit, the production did not hire any of the franchise’s original writers, prompting him to question why studios believe that others can better understand the material than those who have dedicated two decades to building it.
He also extended this critique to ‘The Last of Us,’ praising Pedro Pascal’s performance while still questioning why the original game’s voice cast wasn’t more directly involved in the television adaptation. Judge framed his frustration as part of a larger industry trend, arguing that studios often take successful, established properties and assemble entirely new creative teams instead of leveraging the expertise of those already familiar with the material.
Amazon’s ‘God of War’ adaptation, which is being led by ‘Wheel of Time’ showrunner Rafe Judkins, will follow the events of the 2018 game as Kratos and his son Atreus navigate the Norse realm of Midgard. The project has recently encountered setbacks after Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos, suffered a bicep tear during filming, leading to the need for a recast, with Dave Bautista reportedly among the candidates for the role.
Judge has not confirmed whether he will have any involvement with the series, either in a cameo or otherwise, and it remains uncertain how his public comments might influence that relationship moving forward. With casting uncertainties already surrounding the Kratos role and now public commentary from the character’s most recent and celebrated voice actor, Amazon’s series faces increasing pressure to honor the depth of the source material before it even premieres.
