Star Wars enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the return of their favorite green-eared bounty hunting duo since their theatrical departure. That anticipation now has a definitive end date.

The film represents a pivotal moment for the franchise, marking the return of Star Wars to cinemas for the first time in seven years since 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Directed by Jon Favreau, it continues the journey of bounty hunter Din Djarin and his small green companion, following the events of the original Disney+ series that initiated it all.

Disney has officially announced that ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu‘ will start streaming on Disney+ on September 2, precisely 103 days after its theatrical release on May 22. This quick turnaround is no coincidence, especially considering the film’s performance in theaters.

The film grossed $345.2 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie to date, even falling short of 2018’s ‘Solo,’ which earned $393 million. Disney has acknowledged that the film did not meet expectations for a mainline Star Wars theatrical release.

This disappointing box office performance seems to have expedited the film’s journey to streaming. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ had already made its digital and premium video-on-demand debut in July, appearing on platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home shortly after its theatrical run, quickly topping Blu-ray sales charts.

Despite the lower box office figures, audience reception tells a different story. The film currently boasts an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, in contrast to a much cooler 60% from critics. This suggests that the theatrical stumble may have been more about counterprogramming and franchise fatigue than actual dissatisfaction from viewers.

The narrative follows Din Djarin, portrayed once again by Pedro Pascal, as he and Grogu are enlisted by Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, to aid the New Republic. Their mission involves rescuing Rotta the Hutt, heir to Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, while also pursuing a remaining Imperial leader.

The film features a notable cameo from Martin Scorsese as a fry cook named Hugo Durant, marking his second appearance in the Star Wars universe after a brief role in 2018’s ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story.’ This small yet fitting nod is sure to delight longtime fans who remember his earlier cameo.

Once it arrives on Disney+, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is anticipated to quickly become one of the platform’s most-streamed titles, especially considering that ‘The Mandalorian’ is widely regarded as Disney+’s flagship series. No sequel plans have been confirmed yet, and it remains uncertain whether streaming performance could impact a potential sequel film or a fourth season of the original show.

Looking ahead, the next Star Wars theatrical release is ‘Starfighter,’ featuring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, set to premiere in May 2027. For now, fans can finally mark their calendars for Din Djarin and Grogu’s next adventure, even if it’s on a smaller screen than originally intended.
