Marvel’s mutant reboot has been the worst-kept secret in the industry for months, with casting rumors circulating ever since Kevin Feige’s team began discreetly meeting with actors this summer. Each name that emerged only fueled the excitement that has been building since Disney acquired the X-Men rights back in 2019.

That anticipation peaked at this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Marvel Studios finally unveiled its new team of mutants. Fans waited for hours, eager to discover who would take on the mantle of some of Marvel’s most cherished characters.

One of the night’s standout announcements was the confirmation that ‘Obsession’ breakout Inde Navarrette has been cast as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men‘ reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and scheduled for a May 5, 2028 theatrical release. This role was previously made iconic by Anna Paquin in four films of Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ franchise, adding significant weight to Navarrette’s casting.

The announcement carries an intriguing twist for those who have followed Navarrette’s comments about the franchise. In the weeks leading up to D23, she had openly expressed her desire to portray a different mutant altogether.

In an interview with Variety prior to the reveal, Navarrette confirmed her meeting with director Jake Schreier and shared her excitement for his work on ‘Thunderbolts’. She had previously hoped to land the role of Mystique, the shapeshifting mutant famously played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence in earlier films, making her casting as Rogue a surprising turn for fans.

Navarrette arrives at this significant milestone following a breakout year. Her performance in the horror hit ‘Obsession’ has garnered attention across the industry, with the film reportedly grossing nearly $500 million worldwide against a budget of just $750,000, an impressive return that’s already generating awards-season buzz for her performance this fall.

She wasn’t the only major reveal of the night. Feige also confirmed Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, following the character’s surprise debut in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, alongside Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm.

Adam Driver concluded the event with a video message revealing his role as the villainous Mister Sinister, using the alias Nathaniel Milbury. “Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining the MCU,” Driver said during the D23 announcement, noting they finally found a character he felt a deep connection to.

Social media reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with fans praising the youthful, ensemble-driven approach Marvel seems to be taking with characters like Rogue, Jean Grey, and Cyclops, all portrayed by rising stars rather than established names. This marks a significant shift from Fox’s earlier films, suggesting that Schreier and Feige are aiming for a “First Class”-style dynamic among the younger mutants.

With Navarrette’s Rogue now confirmed alongside a rapidly growing roster, Marvel has made it clear that this is just the beginning of its X-Men rollout. Feige has already hinted that more casting news is on the way before the film hits theaters, leaving fans speculating about which mutants and fan-favorite actors might join the lineup next.

For now, all eyes are on how Navarrette’s Rogue will be portrayed on screen, especially given the character’s complex, absorption-based powers and her long history as one of the X-Men’s most emotionally intricate figures.
