Marvel Reveals X-Men Cast at D23 with Adam Driver’s Villain Reveal
D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event has a reputation for saving its most significant announcements for the end, and this year’s Disney Entertainment Showcase was no exception. With trailers, costume reveals, and surprise video appearances, Marvel Studios concluded its segment with an announcement fans have eagerly anticipated since the Fox acquisition.
For years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced the question of not if the X-Men would join, but who would portray them. Rumors circulated, and Sadie Sink’s unexpected appearance as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ only fueled the speculation.
That speculation came to an end when Kevin Feige took the stage to announce Marvel’s new X-Men cast, confirming that the film will hit theaters exclusively on May 5, 2028. Sink reprises her role as Jean Grey, joined by director Jake Schreier, who previously directed ‘Thunderbolts’ and now takes charge of this highly anticipated reboot.
“It is so wonderful to be here and to finally be able to talk about this character after months of speculation,” Sink shared with the D23 audience during the panel. She then introduced her new co-stars one by one.
Kit Connor, known for ‘Heartstopper’, will take on the role of Scott Summers, also recognized as Cyclops, while ‘Kraven’ actor Christopher Abbott steps into the shoes of Professor Charles Xavier. Samara Weaving joins the telepathic team as Emma Frost, a role that had already been hinted at prior to the event.
The remaining cast brought some genuine surprises. Inde Navarrette, who gained recognition in ‘Obsession’, will portray Rogue, while Maya Boyd has been cast as Storm, giving the team a youthful, “First Class”-style vibe as they head into the reboot.
Then came the evening’s biggest twist. Adam Driver made a surprise appearance via a video message, initially joking about being cast as Magneto before revealing his actual role: a mysterious character named Nathaniel Milbury.
Comic book enthusiasts quickly recognized the name as one of the many identities of Mister Sinister, a notorious geneticist considered one of the X-Men’s most formidable foes. Driver addressed his long-rumored MCU debut directly.
“Kevin and I have been discussing my joining the MCU for years,” Driver stated, adding that they had “found something perfect with characters I feel very deeply about.” This announcement is a fitting introduction for an actor whose casting has been speculated across the industry for months.
Feige also mentioned that this is just the first wave of X-Men casting, hinting that more names will be announced before the film’s 2028 release. For a franchise Marvel has been rebuilding from scratch since regaining the rights, the studio clearly aims to keep fans buzzing ahead of any further reveals.
Reactions on social media were immediate and mixed, with fans analyzing each casting choice against decades of comic book history. Sink and Connor’s youthful portrayal of Jean Grey and Cyclops has already sparked considerable debate about how faithful this version will be to classic X-Men lore, while Driver’s casting as Mister Sinister has largely been celebrated as an inspired choice.
This reveal caps off an exciting period for Marvel’s mutant plans, following Sink’s explosive introduction as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. With Schreier confirmed as director and a star-studded cast in place, the X-Men’s long-awaited arrival in the MCU finally feels tangible.
