Hugh Jackman Pleads with Kevin Feige to Join ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as Deadpool Interrupts
Marvel Studios has created a sensation with its surprise casting reveals, and D23 showcased one of its most unpredictable moments yet. The event was already filled with significant announcements, including a new Doctor Doom trailer and the unveiling of the cast for ‘X-Men’, leaving fans eager for more surprises.
As the lights dimmed for the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ segment, Marvel surprised everyone with a video message from Hugh Jackman. Instead of showcasing new footage, Jackman made a heartfelt and somewhat urgent appeal to join the cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, mentioning his frequent collaborator. “I’d love to join, and I might be able to convince Ryan to appear,” Jackman said, referring to his longtime ‘Deadpool’ co-star Ryan Reynolds.
Chaos ensued as Reynolds’ Deadpool character began heckling Jackman from off-screen, questioning why Marvel would need two more characters when they already had a sizable cast. Reports from the audience noted Deadpool telling Jackman to “follow the script,” transforming what could have been a straightforward request into a comedic spectacle. Kevin Feige, however, chose not to engage with the antics, moving on with the panel and introducing Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell to present the new Doomsday footage.
This humorous exchange wasn’t entirely unexpected. Just weeks prior, Reynolds had crashed Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con, debuting a gray X-Force suit under the alias “Ricky” while pleading for a role in ‘Doomsday’, only for Downey Jr. to declare that the film was already completed.
Recycling the same bit at two major Marvel events in such a short span seems more like a strategic rollout than mere coincidence, and it has fans buzzing about the possibility of Wolverine and Deadpool making appearances in the film. Some media outlets are already treating Jackman’s video as an unofficial confirmation, even though Marvel has yet to make an official statement on stage.
Fans have plenty of reasons to hope this rumor holds true. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, marking Marvel’s only R-rated release to date. Additionally, Reynolds has confirmed that another ‘Deadpool’ film is in development, giving both characters significant box office appeal.
This isn’t the first time Jackman and Reynolds have engaged in this playful banter publicly. The duo has a long-standing history of exchanging light-hearted jabs regarding Jackman’s on-again, off-again retirement as Wolverine, dating back to Reynolds’ original campaign to include him in the ‘Deadpool’ franchise.
Fan reactions to the D23 segment were swift, with clips of Jackman’s appeal and Deadpool’s interruptions quickly circulating on social media. While Marvel has yet to confirm whether the pair will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the timing, humor, and ongoing public campaigning suggest that the studio may be hinting at something significant.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, uniting heroes from the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four for what is being promoted as the beginning of the end for the Multiverse Saga.
