Adam Driver Cast as Mister Sinister in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ at D23 Reveal
Marvel Studios has a reputation for transforming its major casting announcements into theatrical spectacles, and this year’s D23 event certainly lived up to that legacy. With a packed lineup of new footage and highly anticipated announcements, the night was shaping up to be one of the studio’s most memorable in recent years.
At the heart of the excitement was the studio’s eagerly awaited ‘X-Men’ reboot, a project that has been the focus of intense speculation since Disney acquired the character rights in 2019. Fans spent the summer trying to guess who would join Marvel’s new mutant team, with one name creating more intrigue than most.
That intrigue was finally resolved when Adam Driver appeared via video message during the D23 panel, initially joking about being cast as Magneto before correcting himself to reveal his actual role: Nathaniel Milbury. Comic book enthusiasts quickly recognized this name as one of the many aliases of Mister Sinister, one of the X-Men’s most infamous and dangerous foes.
Driver addressed the years of speculation regarding his potential debut in the MCU, stating, “Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining the MCU. Now I feel like we’ve” found the right fit, according to comments made during the reveal.
This casting is particularly significant given Driver’s history of being linked to Marvel roles that never came to fruition. He was reportedly a top contender for Mister Fantastic before Pedro Pascal ultimately secured the role, making his eventual turn as a villain feel like a fitting twist for an actor whose MCU future has been a topic of debate for years.
Driver joins a rapidly expanding ‘X-Men’ cast that features Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, following her surprise appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, alongside Kit Connor as Cyclops and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Christopher Abbott will portray Professor X, while Inde Navarrette takes on Rogue and Maya Boyd steps into the role of Storm.
In the comics, Jean Grey and Mister Sinister have a complex and pivotal relationship, which could hold significant implications if Marvel chooses to explore it on screen. Given that Feige specifically teased the new film as “Jean Grey’s story,” fans are already speculating on how Driver’s villain might influence that dynamic.
Director Jake Schreier, known for his work on ‘Thunderbolts’, will lead the cast into production, with the film currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 5, 2028. Feige and Schreier reportedly spent the summer auditioning actors, with final screen tests occurring shortly after the July 4th holiday.
Fan reactions to Driver’s casting have been largely positive, with many praising the decision as an inspired way to bring one of Marvel’s more cerebral and unsettling villains to life. The playful misdirection with Magneto only added to the moment, providing an extra layer of surprise that fans have been analyzing across social media since the reveal.
Feige has confirmed that this is not the complete cast list, leaving ample room for more announcements as Marvel continues to build its new mutant universe ahead of the film’s 2028 release. For now, all eyes are on how Driver’s interpretation of Mister Sinister will shape the story once production begins.
