‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaks Box Office Records While ‘The Odyssey’ Follows Close
Hollywood has been experiencing a remarkable summer, with two distinct blockbusters exchanging records almost weekly. The combination of a web-slinging superhero reboot and an ambitious literary epic from one of cinema’s most revered directors has turned this late-summer box office into a highly competitive and lucrative run.
As we move further into August, the momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Both films have been setting new benchmarks over the past several weekends, transforming what could have been a quiet period into one of the most profitable box office stretches in recent memory.
Leading the pack, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has once again taken charge, raking in nearly $19 million on Friday, putting its third weekend on track for approximately $65 million domestically, a 55 percent drop from the previous frame. This performance elevates the film’s domestic total to $780.8 million, solidifying Sony and Marvel’s latest webslinging adventure as one of the year’s biggest theatrical events.
The film has already made history well before this latest achievement. ‘Brand New Day’ recently surpassed $700 million domestically in just 13 days, officially becoming the fastest movie to reach that milestone, surpassing both ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which previously shared the record at 16 days each. It currently ranks as the sixth highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office.

Trailing closely is Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘, which is also making its own record-setting strides in theaters. The film earned $51 million in its third weekend, a 43 percent drop, marking the best third-weekend performance of Nolan’s career at the domestic box office. This brings the film’s domestic total to $396.5 million, positioning it well on its way to surpassing the half-billion mark.
If ‘The Odyssey’ crosses the half-billion threshold, it will become Nolan’s second-highest grossing film domestically, only behind ‘The Dark Knight’, which concluded its run at $534 million. This would be a significant achievement for a filmmaker whose portfolio already includes some of the most commercially successful original blockbusters of the last two decades.
Both films are set to share IMAX and premium large-format screens again this coming weekend, a competitive dynamic that has fueled both releases rather than detracting from either’s audience. Industry estimates suggest that ‘The Odyssey’ could earn between $18 million and $23 million domestically, with international estimates ranging from $20 million to $25 million across 74 territories.

In addition, this weekend sees the release of several new wide releases aiming to find their niche alongside these two box office titans. Paramount and Spin Master’s ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’ opens in 3,545 domestic theaters, while Angel Studios’ ‘The Brink of War’ debuts at 2,083 locations, both targeting family and counter-programming audiences.
On the international front, ‘Brand New Day’ has already exceeded $1 billion overseas, making it the second-fastest film ever to achieve that milestone, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Combined with its domestic earnings, the film’s worldwide total continues to climb toward the $2 billion mark, a figure that would place it among a select group of films in box office history.
With both films defying typical post-opening drop-off trends, this late-summer period has quickly emerged as one of the strongest theatrical windows of the year. With ‘Spider-Man’s record-breaking pace and Nolan’s career-best returns, 2026 is shaping up to be a truly historic year at the movies.
