Rogue and Storm Pose Together as Fans Embrace Marvel’s New X-Women
Casting announcements at D23 often spark immediate fan excitement, but the moments that follow can be just as impactful once the initial buzz fades. For Marvel’s newly assembled ‘X-Men‘ cast, the days after their big reveal have provided fans with a steady stream of candid glimpses into how these actors are connecting off stage.
The excitement has been building since Friday night, when Marvel Studios officially unveiled its core roster for the highly anticipated mutant reboot. Amid the surprises and confirmed rumors, the reveal gave fans plenty to analyze, but it’s the chemistry developing behind the scenes that continues to generate headlines long after the announcement.
A recently shared photo featuring Inde Navarrette and Maya Boyd together has quickly gained traction online, with fans embracing the image as an early glimpse of the on-screen bond between Rogue and Storm. The two actresses appear relaxed and clearly at ease with one another, signaling a meaningful connection for a fanbase eager to see authentic camaraderie among the new ensemble.
Navarrette’s casting as Rogue came with its own layer of surprise leading up to the reveal. The ‘Obsession’ breakout had previously mentioned meeting with director Jake Schreier and expressed interest in playing Mystique rather than Rogue, making her eventual casting a twist for fans who had been closely following her comments.
In the comics, Rogue’s defining ability is her power to absorb others’ abilities and memories through skin contact, a trait that makes physical touch inherently risky and has historically rendered her one of the X-Men’s more isolated members. Anna Paquin previously portrayed the role in Fox’s earlier ‘X-Men’ film series, giving Navarrette a significant legacy to uphold.
Boyd’s casting as Storm comes from a different career trajectory. The Broadway performer, known for her role in ‘& Juliet’, is making her feature film debut with this role, stepping into a character whose comic book history includes leading the X-Men and, at times, ruling Wakanda.
The pairing of these two characters carries significant narrative weight beyond mere casting news. Both Rogue and Storm have long been central figures within the X-Men’s ensemble dynamic, and the early bonding between the actresses suggests Marvel is intentional about fostering real relationships among the cast before production begins.
They are joined in the new lineup by Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver taking on a villainous role as Nathaniel Milbury, an alias for the comics’ Mister Sinister. Director Jake Schreier, who previously helmed ‘Thunderbolts’, is set to lead the ensemble when the film hits theaters on May 5, 2028.
This marks the first time the X-Men have come together on screen since Fox’s 2019 film ‘Dark Phoenix’, and the first true X-Men team-up film set entirely within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With such a long gap since the characters last appeared together, fans have been particularly attentive to every detail indicating how this new era might differ from what came before.
Reactions to the Navarrette and Boyd photo have been overwhelmingly positive, with many fans expressing hope that their on-screen chemistry as Rogue and Storm will reflect some of that same effortless energy. For a franchise built around themes of found family and team dynamics, these early candid moments are quickly becoming just as newsworthy as the official casting announcements themselves.
