Marvel Studios has not assembled an all-hands-on-deck Avengers team since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ broke box office records with a stunning $357 million domestic opening weekend. This seven-year hiatus has left fans eager for another grand reunion, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is poised to deliver just that, featuring the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans alongside a vast ensemble cast that spans various eras of Marvel storytelling.

Disney kicked off advance ticket sales for the film immediately after releasing its first trailer before San Diego Comic-Con, a move that came months earlier than typical for major blockbusters. This early launch was a calculated risk, considering the film’s release date of December 18 is still about four months away, but the results have validated the gamble significantly.

According to Variety, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales within its first 24 hours, a figure that doubled the first-day presales of 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ despite that film having all formats and screens available at launch. The momentum has continued to build, with the film reportedly exceeding $20 million in domestic pre-sales roughly two weeks later, as per tracking data from Global Box Office, marking the highest advance ticket total ever recorded this far ahead of a film’s release.

The significance of these numbers is amplified by the limited rollout. Tickets have been available in only about 1,000 domestic theaters through Marvel’s premium Infinity Vision format, a small fraction of the over 4,000 North American screens the film will occupy on opening weekend. This format restriction is partly due to Warner Bros. securing exclusive access to IMAX screens for ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which shares the same December 18 release date, leading fans to dub the day “Dunesday.”

This excitement has trickled down to individual theaters, where devoted fans are tracking showtimes and ticket sales at local AMC locations. One user on a box office forum recently shared data on Thursday preview sales across 10 Bay Area theaters, noting thousands of tickets sold across more than 100 showtimes well in advance of the film’s release, showcasing how closely fans are monitoring every available data point.

While this detailed tracking has its limitations and cannot reliably predict a final opening weekend total, it reflects the same enthusiasm driving the film’s official numbers nationwide. Industry experts have noted that Doomsday’s early pre-sale launch already ranks as the third-highest 24-hour presale total for any post-COVID release, a remarkable achievement considering the film’s limited access to premium formats compared to previous record-holders.

Whether ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can reach Endgame-level numbers remains uncertain, especially given the evolving box office landscape since 2019. Nonetheless, with premium screening showtimes for Thursday and Friday already largely sold out and theaters reportedly adding more showings around Christmas, exhibitors seem confident that demand will continue to rise as the release date approaches.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unites heroes from three distinct universes to confront what Marvel describes as an existential threat unlike any they have faced before. With four months still remaining and records already being shattered, the film’s eventual opening weekend is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched box office stories as we near the end of the year.
