Disney Unveils First Look at ‘Maleficent’ Rollercoaster for Magic Kingdom’s Villains Land
Walt Disney World has been building excitement for its ambitious new project, a dedicated land for Disney’s most iconic villains, over the past two years. Initially teased at D23 in 2024, details remained scarce until recently, with Imagineers confirming a trip to Europe for architectural inspiration during last year’s Destination D23 event, leaving fans eager to learn more about the upcoming land.
The mystery began to unravel at this weekend’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Disney officially announced the name, storyline, and two main attractions for Magic Kingdom. The land will revolve around a corrupted Wishing Well hidden deep within a dark forest, where Disney’s notorious villains gather to harness its dark magic and build their lairs.
Disney has named the new area Villains Land and revealed concept art for its first major attraction, a high-speed rollercoaster themed around Maleficent. This thrilling ride will take guests on a journey through an enchanted briar surrounding the villain’s imposing fortress, featuring dragon-shaped ride vehicles adorned with horns, scales, wings, and glowing green eyes.
According to Disney, the coaster will zoom past Maleficent herself, who will be positioned atop crumbling battlements, surrounded by green flames emanating from the towers. Imagineers have described the attraction as an invitation from Maleficent, one that only the bravest guests will accept. Disney has also hinted that the coaster will feature unique ride elements never before attempted, though specific details remain undisclosed.
The second major attraction in Villains Land will take a different approach. Instead of a thrill ride, guests will experience a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ located in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace.
This attraction will showcase a rotating cast of Disney villains beyond Maleficent, including Cruella de Vil from ‘101 Dalmatians’ and Dr. Facilier from ‘The Princess and the Frog.’ Disney has described these villains as powerful figures who have utilized the Wishing Well’s magic to create their own elegant lairs, allowing each character to display their unique aesthetic within the ride.
While this weekend’s reveal answered many questions about Villains Land, several key details remain unconfirmed. The official names for both attractions, the specific ride system for the Maleficent coaster, height requirements, and the names of restaurants and shops have yet to be announced, along with an opening timeframe for the entire land.
Adding to the excitement, actress Glenn Close made a surprise appearance during the D23 presentation, reprising her role as Cruella de Vil from the live-action ‘101 Dalmatians’ films, further connecting the new land’s villain roster to familiar performances that fans love. With construction still in its early phases and Disney gradually revealing new details, Villains Land is poised to become one of the most ambitious expansions at Walt Disney World, promising a unique storytelling experience within Magic Kingdom.
