‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons crafting one of television’s most ambitious fantasy prequels, adapting George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’ into an expansive Targaryen civil war that has only intensified over time. The third season recently concluded with one of the series’ bloodiest finales, wrapping up the Battle of Tumbleton and paving the way for what has been confirmed as the fourth and final season, offering fans one last journey before the story concludes.

Behind the scenes, showrunner Ryan Condal has been managing more than just the release of Season 3; he is already deep into planning Season 4 while also navigating a well-documented and increasingly public fallout with Martin over creative differences regarding the story’s adaptation. This backdrop has made Condal’s recent remarks about his future in the franchise particularly noteworthy.

In an interview with Collider following the Season 3 finale, Condal expressed that his time in Westeros is nearing its end. “I have really said all I have to or need to say about dragons and Targaryens and thrones,” he stated when asked if he would consider returning to explore another era of Targaryen history once ‘House of the Dragon’ wraps up.

This sentiment isn’t entirely new. Condal had previously mentioned to Deadline before Season 3’s premiere that he sees himself as someone who believes “all good things come to an end,” adding that while anything is possible, he feels he has already conveyed what he needed to about the world of Westeros.

Despite this sense of closure, Condal didn’t dismiss every possibility during the Collider interview. He highlighted the fall of the Targaryen dynasty as the one remaining story that still captivates him, particularly the reign of the Mad King, Aerys II, told from the Targaryen family’s perspective rather than through external viewpoints.

This distinction is significant, given how much of Westeros’s history has already been depicted. Between ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘House of the Dragon,’ and the newly launched ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ Condal has contributed to 26 episodes across various segments of Martin’s universe, providing him with a unique perspective on which stories still feel relevant and which ones he believes have been fully explored.

Condal’s remarks come even as he has extended his overall deal with HBO through 2029, indicating that his creative journey with the network will continue beyond ‘House of the Dragon,’ even if it doesn’t involve the Targaryens. He has previously described this extension as the beginning of whatever comes next for him professionally, rather than a continuation of his current work in Westeros.

With Season 4 confirmed as the series’ final chapter and expected to premiere in 2028, fans have about two more years before Condal’s time with the franchise officially concludes. Given the show’s increasingly public tensions with Martin and Condal’s own repeated indications of wanting to move on, this may genuinely mark the end of his journey in Westeros, whether or not the Mad King story comes to fruition.
