‘House of the Dragon’ Steve Toussaint Reveals Corlys Velaryon’s Sad Season 4 Journey
Grief has been a central theme in ‘House of the Dragon’ since its inception, with Lord Corlys Velaryon bearing a significant burden. Over three seasons, the Sea Snake has faced the loss of a son, a daughter, a grandson, and ultimately his wife, Rhaenys, leaving him a shadow of his former self as an ambitious commander.
This accumulated grief has transformed Corlys’s worldview. Initially a staunch supporter of Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne, he has shifted towards seeking peace, even as the surrounding conflict escalates.
As Season 4 approaches, actor Steve Toussaint hints at the growing strain in Corlys’s relationship with Rhaenyra. He will return to King’s Landing grappling with serious doubts about the queen he has long supported.
Much of this tension stems from the Season 3 finale, ‘The Treasons at Tumbleton,’ where Rhaenyra’s choices led to the High Septon’s death at the hands of Corlys’s son, Alyn. Although Corlys is unaware of his son’s involvement, Toussaint emphasized that the revelation will deeply affect him.
“When Corlys discovers that Alyn was responsible for the Septon’s death, he will feel immense sadness and disappointment,” Toussaint told CBR in an exclusive interview. “Corlys will view this as yet another cost—first his family, and now his son’s emotional wellbeing.”
This sense of loss extends beyond his immediate family. The devastation of Tumbleton resulted in numerous innocent lives lost or displaced, further deepening Corlys’s skepticism regarding the war Rhaenyra continues to pursue.

Toussaint described Corlys’s current situation as a precarious balancing act, where every decision risks distancing him from the values he has fought to uphold. Season 4 will challenge Corlys as he strives to minimize further bloodshed, framing it as a test of how much he can endure before reaching his breaking point.
This narrative aligns with the growing tension between Corlys and Rhaenyra throughout Season 3. Their interactions became increasingly fraught, suggesting that any remaining loyalty is waning as they head into the next chapter.
For a character who has endured relentless loss, Season 4 is set to push Corlys into his most challenging reckoning yet. He must now confront how much more he is willing to sacrifice and for whom.
Toussaint’s insights suggest that this decision will not come easily, marking a shift in Corlys’s arc from grief to a deeper reckoning. Given his pivotal role in the series’ exploration of power’s costs, this transformation could significantly impact the unfolding narrative of the Targaryen civil war.
As Season 4 remains in development, fans will eagerly anticipate how Corlys’s doubts about Rhaenyra will ultimately unfold.
