Kevin Feige Discusses Possibility of ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ in the MCU
Marvel Studios has been meticulously reconstructing its mutant segment, gradually moving towards a future where the X-Men coexist with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This slow-burn strategy has only fueled fan speculation about the potential dynamics once both teams are officially part of the same cinematic universe.
With Jake Schreier’s ‘X-Men‘ reboot confirmed and its youthful ensemble cast revealed at D23, attention has swiftly turned to a pressing question: could Marvel adapt one of its most iconic comic crossovers and have the Avengers face off against the X-Men? Fans have been pondering this for years, especially as the mutants have steadily re-entered the fold following Disney’s acquisition of Fox.
Kevin Feige has addressed this possibility directly, leaving the door wide open. In a conversation about whether an ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ style narrative could eventually hit the big screen, Feige remarked that the years of divided character rights that once restricted Marvel’s storytelling options are now behind them, stating to Phase Zero, “Well what’s fun is it’s all possible now.”
This comment reflects a significant shift in Marvel’s ability to plan its narratives since regaining the X-Men license. Feige further explained that during projects like ‘Captain America: Civil War’ or ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ the studio had to omit “dozens of characters” from the source comics simply because those characters belonged to other studios at the time. Now, as Marvel outlines its future storylines, that limitation has effectively vanished.
This newfound creative freedom comes as Marvel continues to lay the groundwork for its mutant future beyond Schreier’s upcoming film. During a recent Disney Worldbuilders panel at D23, Feige hinted that the studio has an abundance of material to draw from, referencing the characters’ extensive publishing history. “Having 85, almost 90 years of comic book history, there’s so many stories yet to tell,” he said, indicating that what lies ahead likely won’t be limited to a single reboot film.
The current mutant lineup forming for the MCU features some notable young talent, including Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver also joins the cast as Mister Sinister alter ego Nathaniel Milbury, providing Schreier’s film with a truly impressive ensemble to work with.
This new generation of mutants is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, marking a fresh start for the franchise following the events of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ Feige has confirmed that the studio intends to recast the X-Men entirely for this new era, even as legacy actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Hugh Jackman return for cameo appearances in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before that reset takes effect.
While it remains unconfirmed whether this reset will lead to a direct adaptation of ‘Avengers vs. X-Men,’ Feige’s comments suggest that the creative foundations are already being laid. With character rights no longer divided among studios and Marvel actively planning years of future mutant-centric content, the elements for a large-scale crossover event seem to be aligning.
For now, fans will have to engage in speculation and hunt for Easter eggs as Marvel continues to weave X-Men references throughout the current Multiverse Saga, building towards whatever follows ‘Secret Wars’ resets the board entirely. Given the careful approach the studio has taken in this integration, it seems unlikely that Feige would hint at the idea so openly without some version of that crossover eventually making its way to the screen.
