Marvel Fans Get Their First Look at ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Set
Marvel Studios is currently navigating one of its most secretive production phases in years, managing two Avengers films at once while striving to keep plot details under wraps. This secrecy has proven increasingly challenging, especially as the construction of large studio sets inevitably attracts attention from those nearby or flying overhead.
This situation appears to have occurred with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the expansive sequel that will conclude the current chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. An aerial photograph has surfaced online, reportedly the first set image associated with the production, showcasing a vast construction site filled with large structures, scaffolding, and equipment across a wooded area.
The image emerges amidst a wave of behind-the-scenes activity related to the film’s early production stages. As reported by industry outlet Filmbase, which monitors job alerts and crew directories for UK film and television workers, Marvel’s production has begun preparations at Pinewood Studios, with an August update confirming that cameras had started rolling before the entire crew was placed on an unusual five-week hiatus.
This break is expected to last until the end of September, according to Filmbase, indicating that the newly released set image likely captures construction work completed prior to the hiatus. Notably, the same report also mentioned that Marvel’s separate ‘X-Men’ reboot is anticipated to start filming at what seems to be the same Pinewood facility, suggesting that the studio is managing an unusually packed production schedule across multiple flagship franchises at once.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have publicly discussed the demanding nature of this period, as they are finishing post-production on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ while simultaneously preparing ‘Secret Wars’ for its own filming. In a conversation with Collider after their San Diego Comic-Con panel, Anthony Russo described the overlapping workload as “complicated but thrilling,” acknowledging the scale of managing two major productions concurrently.
When asked about the timeline for when cameras would start rolling on ‘Secret Wars,’ Russo remained vague, stating only that it would happen soon and that the timeline was tight enough to make the filmmaking team “sweat.” The announcement of a five-week production hiatus weeks later suggests that the pressure has intensified as the shoot has commenced.
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is currently positioned as the fortieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serves as the concluding chapter of Phase Six and the Multiverse Saga, following directly from ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The film’s release date has already shifted from its original May 7, 2027 slot to a new premiere date of December 17, 2027, mirroring a similar delay experienced by ‘Doomsday,’ which was also pushed from May to December 2026.
Both Avengers films are being filmed at Pinewood Studios in England, continuing a production tradition closely associated with Marvel’s largest tentpole releases in recent years. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role across both films as Doctor Doom, working from a screenplay co-written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with the Russo brothers again sharing directing duties as they did on ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
With much speculation already surrounding ‘Secret Wars’ and its potential ending on Doctor Doom’s Battleworld throne, surrounded by resurrected heroes stripped of their memories, this newly released construction image only adds fuel to ongoing fan theories about the massive, multiverse-spanning sets the production will need to realize that ambitious conclusion. As the crew’s hiatus is expected to end soon, further glimpses of the film’s physical sets seem likely as production ramps back up.
