The tragic passing of Hayden Panettiere has prompted friends, fans, and colleagues to reflect on her life’s challenges. Griff Furst, the director of one of her last films, has shared insights into his experiences with the actress and the events that unfolded after filming concluded.

Furst directed Panettiere in the 2025 film ‘A Breed Apart’. In a video shared on his Instagram, he revealed that members of Panettiere’s team reached out to him later, expressing concerns for her well-being and suggesting he participate in an intervention.

While Furst expressed his worries for Panettiere and his desire to support her, he also noted that directors and producers often lack complete visibility into an actor’s personal struggles outside of the filming environment.

“A producer or director, no matter how certain you are that an actor or crew member is in a bad situation, you don’t have the proof, or the benefit of the time to verify it,” Furst stated.

He elaborated on how productions might assist when they notice someone in distress, which could involve adjusting schedules, gathering feedback from the crew, or designating someone to monitor the individual.

After the filming of ‘A Breed Apart’, Furst maintained communication with Panettiere’s team. Eventually, they concluded that she might benefit from an intervention and asked if he would be involved.

“What eventually got determined was that she might need an intervention and I got asked to participate. I said yes,” he recounted.

However, Furst clarified that the intervention did not occur, at least to his knowledge, and emphasized that he was not responsible for its organization.

“That intervention did not happen, at least not that I’m aware of, and I wasn’t leading the charge on that and it wouldn’t have been appropriate for me,” he stated.

Panettiere passed away on Sunday at the age of 36. Authorities are currently investigating her death, but police have reported no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances when she was discovered unresponsive in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. The DEA has also joined the investigation.

Emergency dispatch audio has indicated an apparent overdose and cardiac arrest, but these details have yet to be confirmed as Panettiere’s official cause of death. An autopsy is anticipated to provide further clarity.

Furst highlighted Panettiere’s extensive history in the entertainment industry, noting that she began acting at just 11 months old and gained fame as a child performer before landing significant roles in projects like ‘Heroes’ and ‘Scream’.

“I grew up on movie sets and I know a whole lot of child actors very well,” Furst remarked. He acknowledged understanding “what it does to somebody to grow up in front of a camera before they’re old enough to consent.”

Furst also mentioned that Panettiere had been candid about her struggles with addiction in her memoir, expressing hope that she would overcome them.

Ultimately, he described his experience on ‘A Breed Apart’ as one where he perceived someone striving to maintain sobriety amid troubling circumstances.

“Somebody fighting to stay sober and who deserved better company around them than what I observed,” Furst concluded.

He wrapped up his statement by criticizing the entertainment industry’s long-standing failure to adequately support individuals grappling with addiction and other challenges.

“Hollywood has an extremely sad history of stars not getting the help that they deserve,” Furst lamented. “I was very lucky to work with Hayden. I wish she was still here.”
