Anton Finch Becomes The Central Threat in ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5

‘Outer Banks‘ has spent five seasons steadily elevating the stakes for its adventurous band of treasure-hunting Pogues, transitioning from local Kildare mysteries to more expansive global conspiracies. The final season needed a formidable new threat to match the emotional turmoil following JJ Maybank’s loss, and Season 4 subtly laid the groundwork for just such an antagonist before anyone realized his significance.

This foundation traces back to a mysterious figure introduced late in Season 4: a wealthy arms dealer and militia leader known for possessing “one of the world’s largest collections of artifacts.” This character, Anton Finch, portrayed by Jason Alan Carvell, has evolved from a shadowy background presence to the primary antagonist of the series’ concluding chapter.

Finch’s introduction in Season 4 positioned him as the puppet master behind some of the show’s most significant treasure hunts, operating at a level far above Lightner, the mercenary Pope confronts in that season’s finale. Shoupe’s investigation into a body found on the beach revealed that both men had been released from prison as part of a deal with a mysterious billionaire, a detail that quietly set the stage for Finch’s larger role before his name gained wider recognition.

This buildup culminates in Season 5, where Finch emerges as the primary threat driving the Pogues’ final mission. As the group races to intercept Chandler Groff and the stolen Blue Crown before it can be sold to a buyer in Portugal, they unwittingly hire a smuggler to transport them to Lisbon, unaware that the smuggler is secretly collaborating with Finch to capture Kiara.

This betrayal divides the group, separating the guys from the girls as they venture out to sea, undermining the close-knit friendship that has sustained the Pogues through four seasons of peril. Co-showrunner Jonas Pate explained the season’s core motivation to Tudum, stating that “they may end up getting treasure as part of their revenge, but it’s all about avenging JJ, and trying to find some solace or peace, and to move on from the grief they all feel.”

Critics have noted how significantly Finch’s presence alters the show’s usual tone in the final season. The character is described as “hard-nosed,” leading a militia that shifts the narrative away from its laid-back treasure-hunting roots and into a realm closer to a “Jason Bourne” thriller, a tonal shift that some reviews suggest costs the series some of its signature charm in the initial episodes.

Finch is not alone in this final chapter. Season 5 also introduces Legen Dari as Sadie Finch, hinting at a family connection tied to the character’s broader operation, along with new faces like Josh Hooks as Driss and Ali Lopez-Sohaili as Zac, both shrouded in secrecy as the season’s international storyline unfolds.

This expanded international scope signifies a deliberate escalation for a show that initially focused on local island politics between Pogues and Kooks. With Finch’s militia pursuing the group across multiple countries while Groff attempts to offload the Blue Crown, Season 5 essentially features two parallel manhunts, compelling the Pogues to navigate threats on two fronts simultaneously.

The casting of Carvell, known for roles in “Ruthless” and “Godfather of Harlem,” indicates that Netflix intends for Finch to carry substantial dramatic weight rather than serve as a minor obstacle. Given how much of Season 4 subtly built toward his reveal, and how directly his militia now threatens the Pogues’ survival, Finch stands as the closest thing ‘Outer Banks’ has to a final boss as it approaches its series conclusion.

As the show has cycled through various villains over its run, from Ward Cameron to Carlos Singh to Chandler Groff, concluding with a character this meticulously developed over multiple seasons suggests the writers aimed for their final antagonist to feel earned rather than rushed.
