Jaafar Jackson Explains Janet Jackson’s Absence in ‘Michael’: She May Be Working on Her Own Film
The biopic ‘Michael’ has emerged as one of the year’s most surprising box office hits, amassing over $1 billion globally while showcasing the life of Michael Jackson through his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson. However, one notable absence has raised eyebrows among fans and critics alike: Michael’s iconic sister, Janet Jackson, is not featured in the film.
This omission led to much speculation when ‘Michael’ premiered, with La Toya Jackson, another sibling, providing the initial public explanation during the film’s Los Angeles debut in April.
In an interview with Variety at that time, La Toya shared that Janet had been invited to be portrayed in the film but chose to decline, stating, “I wish everybody was in the movie. She was asked and she kindly declined so you have to respect her wishes.”
Now, Jaafar is adding a new perspective to that explanation, hinting at something potentially significant on the horizon. In a conversation with GQ Middle East, Jaafar suggested that Janet’s absence might be linked to her own creative aspirations, saying, “I don’t want to speak too early, but Janet has ideas of maybe doing her own film. So having someone portrayed in this and then choosing a different actor for her own is just…” He left the thought hanging, hinting at future possibilities.
This framing indicates a practical consideration on Janet’s part: if she is indeed working on her own biopic, having another actress portray her in a separate film could complicate casting decisions for her own project. Digital Music News, which also reported on Jaafar’s comments, noted that he implied Janet may not have wanted an actress selected to play her before she had the chance to choose who would depict her in her own narrative.
Jaafar has consistently minimized any notion of a rift between Janet and the ‘Michael’ production, portraying her absence as a thoughtful decision rather than a personal slight. This stands in contrast to earlier reports from Page Six, which suggested that tensions arose during a private family screening of the film, claiming Janet had critiques about nearly every scene, from the acting to the makeup, according to their sources.

Director Antoine Fuqua has also commented on Janet’s choice, expressing that he holds no resentment towards her decision. At the film’s premiere, Fuqua stated, “I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s OK. She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters,” emphasizing that Janet’s absence has not impacted her relationship with her nephew or his performance.
While a Janet Jackson biopic has not been officially announced by her or any studio, the timing aligns with a growing interest in the Jackson family’s cinematic presence. With ‘Michael’ already confirmed for a sequel and Jaafar hinting at Janet’s own project, there seems to be potential for an expansive, interconnected series of Jackson family biopics.
Janet’s illustrious career certainly warrants a feature-length film of her own. As one of the best-selling artists in history with 26 Grammy nominations and five wins, her narrative stands strong on its own merits, offering ample material for any potential film beyond her connection to Michael.
For now, fans eager to see Janet’s story on screen will need to wait for more definitive confirmation, but Jaafar’s remarks provide the clearest indication yet that such a project may indeed be in the works.
