Marvel Studios’ live-action ‘X-Men‘ reboot has become one of the most closely monitored casting stories in the MCU. Over the past few months, new names have emerged almost weekly as the studio quietly assembles its mutant lineup. Fans have been eagerly refreshing their timelines, trying to piece together who will be part of director Jake Schreier’s film.

Cailee Spaeny has been at the forefront of this speculation for weeks, initially rumored as a frontrunner for one of the franchise’s most iconic roles. Industry insider Jeff Sneider reported that the ‘Civil War’ and ‘Alien: Romulus’ star was nearing a deal to play Rogue, and many fans had already considered the casting nearly finalized ahead of Marvel’s D23 presentation.

This makes the latest update particularly noteworthy. A post from the X/Twitter account Cosmic Marvel, referencing a report from Knight Edge Media, indicates that Spaeny is still in discussions with Marvel Studios for a role in the ‘X-Men’ reboot, despite not landing the part fans anticipated. The Rogue role has ultimately gone to Inde Navarrette, the breakout star of ‘Obsession,’ who had been linked to the project since revealing her meeting with Schreier. This leaves Spaeny’s status as an open question rather than a closed door.

Instead of stepping away, Spaeny seems to be in the running for a different mutant role. Knight Edge Media reports that she is now in talks for another character, with Magik being one possibility that would allow her to utilize the horror skills she honed in ‘Alien: Romulus.’ Other alternatives like Kitty Pryde and Polaris have also been mentioned, though nothing has been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios.

This update aligns with a tumultuous summer filled with overlapping X-Men rumors. Spaeny’s name first surfaced in the Rogue conversation alongside a competitive list of contenders, including Odessa A’zion, Sophie Thatcher, Margaret Qualley, and Hunter Schafer, each appearing at different times as insiders raced to get ahead of the studio’s eventual announcement.

Fan reactions to Spaeny potentially remaining in the franchise have been largely positive, even with the specific role still uncertain. Many fans had strongly supported her as Rogue earlier this year, and losing that role to Navarrette hasn’t diminished interest in seeing her join the ensemble in some capacity.

Marvel’s mutant reboot has already secured several major names, shaping what the final roster might look like. Charles Melton is reportedly finalizing a deal to portray Beast, while Kit Connor has been confirmed as Cyclops after also being considered for the role early on. Samara Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost and Sadie Sink stepping into Jean Grey rounded out the film’s initial wave of announcements.

However, not every aspect of the casting rumor mill has held up seamlessly. Sneider himself later expressed doubts about whether Rogue would play a significant role in the film’s storyline, reminding fans that even well-sourced reports can shift quickly as negotiations unfold behind closed doors.

Marvel Studios’ untitled ‘X-Men’ reboot is currently set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, providing ample time for Spaeny’s situation and the rest of the cast to evolve before anything becomes official. For now, the door remains open for her to join the mutant team, just not in the role most fans initially expected.
