Marvel’s presence at D23 this year was significant, transcending the usual trailer drops and cast announcements. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaching its December release, the studio made a clear statement about the transition from its founding stars to the new generation taking the spotlight.

This statement was highlighted on stage at the Honda Center during the Disney Entertainment Showcase, where Kevin Feige introduced three iconic names from the MCU’s early days. What transpired after the cameras stopped rolling proved to be just as memorable as the onstage events.

Stars of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell, were spotted backstage at D23. They had just concluded their onstage segment, where Feige presented a special look at the film along with a new poster. Downey returns not as Tony Stark but as Victor von Doom, while Evans and Atwell reprise their roles as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, respectively.

The emotional weight of their reunion was palpable, given the characters’ histories. Atwell remarked that audiences cherish happy endings, while Evans humorously recalled how close Steve Rogers came to achieving that at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ quipping that “we should’ve known better” before the trio teased new footage focused on Doctor Doom’s impending threat.

That warmth continued as they stepped away from the spotlight. Evans and Downey were also seen backstage welcoming the newly announced ‘X-Men’ reboot cast, with one of the veteran actors saying, “Welcome aboard,” a gesture that aligned two of the actors pivotal in launching the modern MCU with the cast now responsible for carrying one of Marvel’s cherished franchises forward.

Downey’s introduction during the panel was framed pointedly, presenting him not just as the star who helped build the franchise but as the man who might now close a chapter of it. This contrast highlighted how different Downey’s current MCU role is from the one fans watched for over a decade as Iron Man.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unites heroes from three distinct corners of Marvel’s multiverse, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. The confirmed ensemble cast features Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, and Sebastian Stan, among others, with Anthony and Joe Russo returning to direct.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18 and tickets already available, moments like this backstage interaction provide fans with plenty to speculate about ahead of the film’s release. Whether or not this gesture hints at any story elements, it offered a warm glimpse of Marvel’s legacy actors passing the torch to the next wave of stars, just as the studio gears up for one of its most significant theatrical events yet.
