Horror franchises thrive on their ability to generate profits quickly, and few have done it as successfully as ‘Insidious.’ Since its debut in 2010 on a modest budget, the series has continuously found ways to attract audiences to theaters, even as reviews for its later films have become increasingly mixed.

This trend continued with the release of ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ the sixth film in the franchise and a direct sequel to 2023’s ‘Insidious: The Red Door.’ Directed by Jacob Chase, the movie follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers her ability to travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm central to the series, only to unlock a perilous power to bring entities from there back into the real world.

Early audience reactions are in, landing the film in the “fine, but not great” category. CinemaScore reported that ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ earned a C+ grade from opening night viewers, reflecting the mixed critical reception it has garnered thus far.

This grade aligns closely with the critical consensus on the film. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes shows ‘Out of the Further’ at 58% fresh, a score that, while not outstanding, still surpasses its immediate predecessor, ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ which concluded its run at just 40%. Deadline highlighted that the best-reviewed film in the franchise remains the original from 2010, which holds a 60% fresh rating, indicating that ‘Out of the Further’ is just shy of matching the series’ highest score to date.

The lukewarm reception may stem from the film functioning more as a spinoff than a direct continuation of the main storyline. Lin Shaye is the only returning cast member from the original series, with this installment centered around Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers as a new family confronting the franchise’s familiar horrors.

On the box office front, early projections indicated that ‘Out of the Further’ was aiming for a debut in the vicinity of $25 million, aligning it more with 2018’s ‘Insidious: The Last Key,’ which opened at $29.5 million, or ‘The Red Door’s’ $33 million start, rather than the franchise’s highest domestic opener, ‘Insidious: Chapter 2,’ which debuted at $40.2 million back in 2013. Made on a modest $18 million budget, according to reports from Sony and Blumhouse, the film doesn’t require blockbuster numbers to be profitable, a strategy that has kept the franchise consistently successful across all five previous entries.

This financial history gives ‘Out of the Further’ a solid chance to help push the overall series past a significant milestone. With the first five films collectively grossing $740 million worldwide, the new entry has a real opportunity to help elevate the franchise beyond the $800 million mark globally, provided it performs similarly to its predecessors internationally.

Whether a C+ CinemaScore and average reviews will be sufficient to maintain strong word-of-mouth in the coming weeks remains uncertain, especially with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ still reigning at the top of the box office for its fourth consecutive weekend. Nevertheless, for a franchise that has built its reputation on modest budgets and reliable returns rather than critical acclaim, a decent grade from opening night audiences may be all ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ requires to keep the series alive.
