Chris Hemsworth has spent years traveling the globe to portray his black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake in Netflix’s successful ‘Extraction‘ franchise. However, for the third installment, the actor is finally filming in his hometown, a long-awaited opportunity that has eluded the series since its inception.

Recent set photos obtained by BACKGRID show Hemsworth on location filming ‘Extraction 3’ in Sydney, Australia. The images depict the actor in character, surrounded by crew and equipment, indicating an intense shoot as production unfolds in the area.

This Sydney shoot is a significant milestone for both Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave, who has directed all three films in the franchise. Currently, production on ‘Extraction 3’ is taking place across the New South Wales South Coast and Sydney, with Hemsworth reprising his role alongside returning co-stars Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani.

The Australian backdrop marks a true homecoming for the shoot, especially considering the franchise’s complex production history. ‘Extraction 2’ was initially set to film in Sydney back in September 2021, but COVID-19 restrictions led Netflix to move production overseas, first to Prague and then to Vienna. The original ‘Extraction’ also had a diverse production journey, filming in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, India, before concluding in Ban Pong, Thailand.

Hargrave expressed his enthusiasm about finally filming in Australia, stating, “We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales.” He emphasized the goal of pushing the limits of action filmmaking with ‘Extraction 3,’ promising an ambitious project.

This production is not only a creative achievement for the franchise but also a significant boost for the local economy. It is projected to create around 450 jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to New South Wales’ screen industry, supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund via Screen NSW. NSW Minister of the Arts John Graham publicly welcomed the cast and crew, stating, “We welcome this high calibre cast and crew filming ‘Extraction 3’ in Sydney and on the South Coast. To Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, Golshifteh Farahani and the rest of the team – we hope you enjoy your time in NSW. It is good to see Netflix continuing screen production here.”

While the plot details remain closely guarded, Netflix has confirmed that the film will continue from the events of 2023’s ‘Extraction 2.’ In that film, Tyler Rake was tasked by Elba’s enigmatic character to rescue his ex-wife Mia’s sister Ketevan and her children from a perilous Georgian prison. As for the direction of the story, Hargrave hinted that fans can expect the franchise’s signature intense stunt work and long-take action sequences to be elevated even further.

Filming is set to continue across Sydney and the South Coast through September, so fans can expect more set photos and behind-the-scenes glimpses in the coming weeks.
